Vietnam's outbound tourism market continues to demonstrate positive growth potential, despite ongoing economic difficulties. A survey of Vietnamese tourists planning to travel abroad within the next 12 months shows that 79.7% intend to travel this summer. However, it's noteworthy that only 22.2% of respondents have booked (in whole or in part) their trips; the majority are still only considering or planning a suitable destination.

According to The Outbox Company, one of the most notable aspects of Vietnam's outbound tourism market in the summer of 2024 is the rise of the middle-aged traveler segment. Survey results show that Gen X (those born between 1965 and 1980) is the leading market segment for this summer; with 58.8% of travelers in this group surveyed stating they will take at least one overseas trip this summer. This figure is double that of the younger Gen Z group.

Domestic tourism continues to be the dominant trend for Vietnamese travelers when going abroad, with 64.4% of Vietnamese tourists choosing nearby destinations within Asia for their next trip. Vietnamese tourists remain "loyal" to traditional destinations such as South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Singapore. Notably, China has replaced Taiwan as the new prominent destination in the top 5 most popular international destinations for Vietnamese tourists, according to a survey by The Outbox Company.

Regarding tourism budgets, it is evident that the difficult economic situation continues to directly impact the spending budget of Vietnamese tourists traveling abroad, as most of the reasons for increases and decreases in spending by Vietnamese tourists are centered on financial concerns and costs.

On the other hand, the survey results also show a positive point: tourism is increasingly becoming an important activity for Vietnamese people, with 31% of tourists willing to spend more on travel experiences and 45.6% of Vietnamese tourists maintaining the same travel budget as before.

The average spending of Vietnamese tourists on overseas trips this summer is expected to be between $1,000 and $1,500. Spending will vary depending on the destination, with Vietnamese tourists willing to spend over $2,000 on trips outside of Asia. The peak season for outbound tourism is predicted to be June and July this year.
