Head of the German Energy Regulator Klaus Mueller on June 20 welcomed resolutions adopted by the agency's advisory council, which call for preparations for the coming winter.

On his personal Twitter page, Mr. Mueller called the newly passed resolutions “important,” saying that these resolutions will ensure planning to ensure supply security with a drill, with multiple scenarios, the ability to save and digitize crisis management.

The nine-point plan calls on the German Energy Authority to reach out to states that want to participate in a crisis exercise scheduled for September 2023 to avoid a crisis scenario that could occur in the context of supply shortages and high energy prices , especially when Germany is in the process of green transition.

At the end of 2022, the German Energy Regulator had to raise the national gas consumption warning level from "stressed" to "critical" after the country fell into an energy crisis due to Russia cutting off gas supplies related to the conflict in Ukraine .

Germany's gas reserves were at 100% capacity ahead of winter, and this careful preparation allowed German leaders to appear relatively confident when asked about the risk of energy shortages. However, in the following days, unusually cold weather threatened Germany's 20% energy savings target.

The average temperature in early mid-December, which was 2.7 degrees Celsius colder than the same period in previous years, caused a spike in gas use. As a result, energy savings reached only 12%. That is why gas consumption was raised from "stressed" to "critical," after some forecasts from German government agencies said that Germany's gas reserves could be empty as early as March 2023, if consumption is at the average level recorded in the period 2018-2021 and especially if the weather remains extremely cold./.
