A section of the Great Wall of China
Authorities in Youyu County said on August 24 that they received a report that a section of the Great Wall had been breached in Yangtianhe County, Shanxi Province.
The damaged section of the wall is part of Section 32 of the Great Wall, one of the few remaining sections from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), according to CCTV on September 4.
Authorities believe a large hole was punched in the wall by a heavy machine, causing irreparable damage.
After investigation, police issued arrest warrants for two suspects, a 38-year-old man surnamed Trinh and a 55-year-old woman surnamed Vuong.
The Shanxi Cultural Heritage Bureau confirmed that the two suspects were construction workers, and that they used an excavator to drill through a section of the Great Wall to create a shortcut while working there.
Both were charged with vandalism of historical heritage.
The Great Wall was begun in small sections in the 5th century BC and was expanded during the reign of Qin Shi Huang from 220 to 220 BC.
UNESCO recognized the Great Wall as a world heritage site in 1987.
