According to QQ , the drama "Wulin Ling," starring Yang Yang, Zhang Ruonan, and Fang Yilun, did not achieve the desired results upon its release. On the Youku platform, the drama's popularity continuously declined for 13 days, reaching a peak of 9,625 points (10,000 points is considered a hot drama), and even hitting a new low on the final day. Its popularity on Maoyan ranked only second, while Yang Yang, a top 90s-generation star in China, failed to attract viewers.

The current average viewership for the series is nearly 8 million views per episode, which is considered to fall short of expectations. Meanwhile, "Wulin Ling" is produced by Zheng Wu Yang Guang, a large and well-known company famous for high-quality series such as "Lang Ya Bang," "Ming Lan's Story," "Cang Hai Chuan," "All Is Well," "People in the Small Alley," "The Great River, " etc. Furthermore, the male lead is Zhan Zhao, a famous martial arts hero on the Chinese screen for decades. However, the series' performance has been quite poor.
According to QQ , when Yang Yang was chosen to play Zhan Zhao, audiences were divided in opinion. Supporters argued that the actor had a handsome appearance, which was a major draw for viewers. Other versions of Zhan Zhao, such as He Jiajing, Xiao Enjun, and Yan Kuan, were also very handsome. Furthermore, Yang Yang's acting in the drama "Mortal Cultivation" showed improvement. He was also a hardworking actor who performed martial arts scenes diligently and didn't shy away from the hardships on set.

However, the weakness of *Wulin Ling* lies in its vague and slow-paced plot in the early episodes. The martial arts scenes are beautifully filmed but feel overly staged, with excessive use of slow-motion shots. Furthermore, the lead actress, Zhang Ruonan, is criticized for her monotonous acting, which is modern but lacks appeal to viewers. Her action scenes lack substance and reveal the use of a stunt double.
Yang Yang's portrayal of Zhan Zhao has also received mixed reviews. In previous versions, Zhan Zhao was always a supporting character to Bao Zheng (Bao Thanh Tian), but this time he was elevated to the main character, thus having more screen time. The producers also took a risk by portraying a Zhan Zhao unlike any seen before, not only strong and sharp but also with moments of vulnerability and sentimentality, making him more emotional.
However, this portrayal of Zhan Zhao is not easily accepted by all viewers. Furthermore, Yang Yang still has weaknesses in his acting, such as a tendency to pose for photos, sometimes having a stiff and emotionless face. In some crying scenes, he stares directly at the screen as if he's performing for the audience rather than expressing the character's true feelings. Viewers believe that Yang Yang's good looks only stand out in photos; when acting, he appears stiff and lacks depth in his characters.

Chinese media considered reprising a character already familiar to audiences and successfully portrayed by previous actors a risky move. Yang Yang failed to conquer the role of Zhan Zhao, unable to overcome the enormous shadow cast by He Jiajing.
