Implementing the Project on restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development, in recent times, many localities in the province have transformed the crop structure, introducing high -value plants and animals into cultivation, in order to increase income on the same area unit. Among them, the conversion of ineffective rice-growing land to lotus and water lily growing in Duy Hai ward, Duy Tien town has brought about practical results.
Coming to Duy Hai ward, Duy Tien town at this time, it is the time when lotus and water lily flowers start to bloom. On the lotus ponds, water lily ponds, flowers compete in color, the fragrance is fragrant in the area. The cheerful laughter of farmers on the flower ponds also starts early. When the sun has just risen, they are there to harvest the lotus flowers that have just bloomed to deliver the shipment to customers on time. This year, Ms. Lu Thi Diu's family (Huong Cat residential group) has expanded the lotus growing area to over 5 hectares. Her family's lotus pond has all kinds of lotus from traditional lotus varieties for seeds, tea to imported lotus varieties for flowers such as Quan Am lotus, super lotus, zuwaba lotus, white lotus... Ms. Diu shared: Lotus has the advantage of being easy to grow, easy to adapt to low-lying, waterlogged land, low investment capital and care but stable yield, products are easy to consume. Fast planting time, only 3 to 4 months to harvest, high efficiency compared to other crops, especially rice.
Also realizing that lotus is a plant suitable for Duy Hai land, Mr. Nguyen Van Kien's family (Dong Hai residential group) boldly rented and subcontracted over 10 hectares of ineffective rice fields from local people to grow lotus. Mr. Kien's lotus pond has only started planting and sowing since 2023 but has already yielded 2 harvests. Currently, his family sells about 2,000 lotus flowers of all kinds to the market every day, during peak season the number of flowers can reach 5,000 flowers, earning hundreds of millions of VND per crop. Mr. Nguyen Van Kien shared: In addition to growing lotus flowers and making lotus tea, this year my family is also nurturing about 30,000 bonsai lotus pots to serve customers who want to decorate their gardens and landscapes. In addition, we have designed a separate lotus pond with a miniature bamboo bridge, a water wharf... to serve tourists to visit, buy flowers and take pictures.
Currently, in Duy Hai ward, there are nearly 10 households participating in growing lotus and water lilies. Recently, the Farmers' Association of Duy Hai ward has established a lotus growing group. The lotus growing group is composed of farmer members and lotus and water lily growing groups. Through group activities, members have the opportunity to exchange information on agricultural weather, markets, prices, plant varieties, disease and epidemic prevention; exchange experiences in production, preservation, consumption of agricultural products, and application of scientific and technical advances in production. Thereby, together, they build and develop the lotus and water lily growing profession in the locality. According to the members' assessment, currently, lotus products are selling quite well. Almost as soon as they are harvested, traders buy them, so farmers do not have to worry about output. As a retailer who regularly goes to Duy Hai to import lotus and water lilies for retail, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mo, Phu Xuyen, Hanoi commented: I go to Duy Hai lotus pond to get flowers to get fresher, more beautiful flowers that can be preserved longer. The lotus here has many new varieties such as zuwaba, white lotus, and Guanyin... which are quite beautiful and long-lasting, so they meet the needs of my regular customers.
With the advantages of fast harvest time, low investment capital and care, easy-to-sell products, growing lotus and water lilies is a model suitable for the policy of transforming the local crop structure. The model opens up a new direction for local farmers to develop the economy and improve the quality of life. Growing lotus also creates seasonal jobs for some local workers as well as contributes to the beauty of the rural landscape.
The project of converting crops on ineffective rice fields to lotus and water lily is a promising direction in Duy Hai at present. And in fact, the lotus and water lily growing model has brought a good economic source to many households here.
