European media reported that Sunderland have agreed to let 19-year-old Jobe Bellingham join Dortmund for £27.8 million, plus £4.2 million in add-ons. The five-year contract also includes a clause that gives Sunderland 15% of the transfer fee if Bellingham is sold again in the future.

If all fees are fully activated, Jobe will become Dortmund's most expensive player in history, surpassing the previous deal for Ousmane Dembélé. For Sunderland, this is the Wearside club's most expensive transfer ever, surpassing the £25m deal that brought Jordan Pickford to Everton in 2017.

Bellingham brothers join Dortmund

Jobe Bellingham is the younger brother of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham. Both came through the Birmingham academy. While Jude had three brilliant seasons at Dortmund before moving to Spain in the summer of 2023, Jobe chose a different path when he joined Sunderland two years ago.

Last season, Jobe played brilliantly in the Championship, helping Sunderland compete for promotion to the Premier League. His consistent form and development potential put Jobe on the radar of many Bundesliga teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig, before Dortmund won the race for his signature.

Dortmund initially offered around £20m, but Sunderland were adamant they would not sell until they reached a suitable valuation. The German club were eventually forced to raise their asking price to complete the deal.

Under owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Sunderland have pursued a strategy of investing in young players. Discovering, nurturing and selling talents such as Bellingham or more recently Tommy Watson (who recently moved to Brighton) is seen as a sustainable direction both financially and professionally.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris had high praise for Bellingham: "Jobe is an exceptional player with a strong competitive spirit. He is very young, but has shown a strong character and a high desire to compete. Working with Jobe has been a great experience."

Dortmund hopes that Jobe will follow in his brother Jude's footsteps to shine.

Joining Dortmund and receiving the number 77 shirt, Jobe Bellingham will follow in the footsteps of his brother Jude, playing at Signal Iduna Park – a place famous for developing top young talents in Europe. This could be a big step in Jobe's career, and also a clear demonstration of the right development direction that Sunderland is pursuing.

At Dortmund, Jobe Bellingham is unlikely to continue playing for England U21s as he will have to play with his new team in the FIFA Club World Cup. Jobe and the German team could face Jude Bellingham's Real Madrid, although that would only happen if both teams reach the quarter-finals.
