In the "Help Center" section of the app, Facebook displays the message: "Starting April 2026, messenger.com will move to facebook.com/messages. You can use facebook.com/messages to continue messaging on the web."
Facebook stated that after messenger.com ceases operation, the system will automatically redirect users to facebook.com/messages for messaging on computers. Users can continue chatting on that site or the Messenger mobile app.
"The Messenger desktop app is no longer working. If you're using Messenger without a Facebook account, you can continue chatting on the Messenger mobile app," Facebook advised users.

Users who wish to recover their chat history can do so using a PIN. If they forget their PIN, they can reset it on their phone or computer by going to: Settings > Privacy and security > End-to-end encrypted chat > Secure storage > Reset PIN.
According to the American technology news site TechCrunch, Messenger was initially launched as Facebook Chat in 2008. In 2011, the platform was renamed Messenger and was initially part of the Facebook app.
In 2014, Messenger became a standalone service and launched a desktop application in 2020. The desktop application was discontinued in December 2025, and the website is also preparing to close.
Meta did not specify the reason for the closure. According to data from various statistical sources, Messenger remains among the top four most popular messaging apps in the world . Therefore, users are dissatisfied with Meta's latest decision.
