Social media is spreading information that the World Football Federation (FIFA) is considering moving the 2026 World Cup matches out of the US due to concerns about immigration policies under US President Donald Trump.

The information appeared around late May - early June this year, when many TikTok, Facebook, X and Threads accounts shared videos claiming that FIFA was considering moving the 2026 World Cup matches from the US to Canada or Mexico due to concerns about policies under Mr. Trump.

TikTok user @raulneedshappiness, one of the first to spread the news, has attracted more than 800,000 views on a clip titled "Trump could cost the US the right to host the 2026 World Cup", claiming that thousands of players, coaches and fans are refusing to travel to the US for fear of being detained or deported, even with valid visas.

These videos are created using artificial intelligence (AI), by inputting text and using an AI voice to simulate the news. This helps rumors spread faster, but also makes many people doubt their authenticity.

However, according to verification by the information verification organization Snopes, there is no evidence from major news agencies that FIFA is considering changing the host country.

The above rumor has only been spread on social media platforms without any confirmed information from FIFA. Snopes has also contacted FIFA for confirmation and will update when there is a response.

The news has attracted much attention because of recent developments regarding the US administration's immigration policies, causing some politicians and human rights organizations to worry about the future of international events such as the 2026 World Cup.

For example, Human Rights Watch sent a letter asking FIFA to reconsider hosting rights if it cannot ensure the safety of participants; the US government warned tourists not to overstay their visas; and several European countries issued travel warnings to the US...

However, in March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Mr Trump at the White House and received a commitment of support for both the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup.

The FIFA President also said: "The world is always welcome in America", to reassure public opinion and reaffirm the commitment to hosting the tournament here.
