FIFA plans to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams.

FIFA's move was spurred by a proposal from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), which aimed to expand opportunities for less well-known teams to participate in the world's biggest football tournament.

FIFA has faced considerable criticism, with some arguing that expanding the tournament to 64 teams is illogical and would lower its quality. However, the world football governing body continues to push forward with discussions.

If approved, 2030 would be the most significant expansion in the history of the modern World Cup, following the increase to 48 teams from 2026.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is said to strongly support the philosophy of globalizing football, viewing the World Cup not only as the ultimate tournament but also as a celebration for all nations around the world .

However, the expansion plan is still under review and no final decision has been made. The official structure of the 2030 World Cup is expected to be finalized only at the end of July 2026, after numerous discussions among member federations.

The 2026 World Cup in North America is seen as a crucial test for the 48-team model, and also as a springboard for FIFA to assess its potential for further progress in the future.
