When people do tourism

In recent years, tourism in the province has made great strides, attracting millions of visitors each year. Tourism development associated with the protection of resources, the environment, the preservation and promotion of community cultural heritage values has been focused on by all levels, sectors and localities. In particular, for local people, community tourism is considered a type of tourism that brings sustainable development, an opportunity to preserve and promote the unique cultural values of the locality.

Community Engagement: The Way to Sustainable Tourism

Ha Lec villagers prepare food for tourists when they come to visit.

In Ha Lec village, Kim Ngan commune, the activities of the Bru-Van Kieu women's community cultural tourism group (DLVHCĐ) have brought a new vitality to the village here. Currently, the group is signing a cooperation agreement with Bang Onsen Spa & Resort to welcome guests to experience the traditional cultural values and culinary culture of the Bru-Van Kieu people.

Head of the Community Tourism Group Ho Thi Ha shared: Although it was only established at the end of 2024, the initial results show that the model is quite effective. The group was trained by the Provincial Women's Union in tourism skills, introducing traditional culture, and connecting the consumption of local agricultural products. In addition, the locality has also focused on mobilizing people to preserve the landscape and environment to attract visitors to the village.

Coming to Ha Lec village, visitors can listen to and enjoy the folk songs of the Bru-Van Kieu people, the custom of inviting people to drink, explore the space of the stilt house, enjoy the rustic dishes, typical of the people here, such as: wild bamboo shoots, rattan shoots, banana flowers, local chickens, fish, shrimp, stone crabs... In particular, visitors can also experience making and enjoying Aơh cake with a simple, rustic preparation method but conveying the feelings of the Bru-Van Kieu people towards visitors from near and far.

Ms. Ho Thi Ha, Ha Lec village said: Since the establishment of the Community Tourism Association, our people have had more income. I hope that in the future, functional units and local authorities will step up promotion to attract more visitors to the village, organize training courses to improve tourist service skills so that our people can do better tourism.

If Ha Lec village is a typical example of community tourism associated with the culture of ethnic minorities, the Phong Nha tourist boat team in Phong Nha commune is an outstanding model of community participation in tourism activities.

Established in the early days of Phong Nha tourism development, the boat team is a gathering place for hundreds of local families with experience in rowing boats to pick up and drop off tourists. The activities of the boat team are organized systematically and professionally under the management of Phong Nha-Ke Bang Tourism Center and Phong Nha Commune People's Committee.

According to Le Chieu Nguyen, Deputy Director of Phong Nha-Ke Bang Tourism Center, the boat team currently has about 800 people, operating under a fair and organized arrangement and coordination of boats to pick up and drop off visitors. The process is that visitors buy boat tickets at the center's centralized ticket counter, then the management board at the wharf will arrange boats to serve in order, ensuring that all boats have their turn to carry passengers and have fair income. This mechanism helps eliminate the situation of soliciting and forcing prices, creating a civilized and friendly tourism environment.

In order for tourism to develop further, there must be supporting mechanisms and policies to create a solid "support" to help tourism in general and community tourism in particular in Quang Tri develop in the right direction, professionally and truly bring long-term benefits to the people.

Opportunities and challenges

Community engagement in tourism is one of the solutions contributing to sustainable tourism development, not only creating jobs, increasing income but also preserving and promoting local cultural identity. However, currently, when doing tourism, people still face many difficulties and challenges.

Specifically, service quality is uneven and unprofessional; many tourist attractions operated by local people are still small and fragmented. Soft skills training such as foreign language communication, situation handling, financial management... for local people is still limited.

This sometimes leads to incomplete experiences for tourists, especially international tourists with high demands. In particular, tourism activities in Quang Tri are often concentrated in a few peak summer months, making people's income unstable, making it difficult to attract high-quality human resources.

Community Engagement: The Way to Sustainable Tourism

Visitors experience making Aơh cakes and enjoy the dances and songs of the Bru-Van Kieu people.

Head of Tourism Management Department, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ha Minh Tuan said: In practice in many localities, if tourism is to develop sustainably, there needs to be close cooperation between people, businesses, state management agencies and tourists.

In particular, state management agencies play a role in strategic orientation, building and promulgating mechanisms and policies to create a favorable legal corridor for tourism activities; building models, training human resources, promoting and raising people's awareness of the role of tourism in socio-economic development; developing products and promoting destinations.

Enterprises are the ones who directly create tourism products and services, invest in technical facilities and meet the diverse needs of tourists. People are the subjects of indigenous culture, and are the ones who directly participate in the service supply chain.

Tourists are the ones who provide sincere feedback and suggestions on service quality to help businesses and management agencies improve, share their positive experiences through word of mouth and social networks, and contribute to promoting the destination's image in a natural and effective way.

In addition, to further develop community tourism in Quang Tri, it is necessary to develop and apply a common set of quality criteria for tourist destinations such as: Hygiene, food safety, minimum amenities and service attitude...; encourage businesses to apply digital technology in booking management, promoting tourist destinations on online platforms (websites, social networks, travel applications) to reach tourists more effectively...

Focus on building tourism products that are associated with the culture of local people in an original way, visitors come here not only to watch performances but also to live, eat, and participate in cultural experiences from the locals. Community tourism villages are needed that are highly adaptable to climate change, turning difficulties into opportunities to create unique tourism products such as the community tourism model in Tan Hoa commune (old), now Kim Phu commune.
