Arabica coffee recovers spectacularly, investors expect sustainable price increase

According to Reuters, the recent arabica coffee trading session marked a recovery after six consecutive days of decline. Investors realized that the arabica market had gone through an oversold period and was now at an ideal time for prices to rise again.

The report also said that Brazil is not currently facing any risk of frost as temperatures remain stable compared to the same period in previous years. However, the weather in the world's largest coffee producer will be closely monitored in the coming weeks.

Brazil's largest coffee cooperative and top exporter, Cooxupe, said farmers had harvested 40.4% of their expected 2025-26 crop, up 9 percentage points from last week but still below the 51.6% level seen a year earlier.

Brazil, which accounts for about 30 percent of the world’s traded coffee, is aggressively expanding its plantings to boost output, according to Bloomberg. The combination of acreage expansion and productivity improvements will add about 23 million bags of coffee over the next decade, boosting exports that topped 46 million bags last year, trading firm Louis Dreyfus Co. predicts.

Data from consultancy StoneX shows that Brazil will plant 300 million new robusta trees by 2025. Although it takes about three years for the trees to reach significant yields, the number of trees could add 2 million bags of coffee to the market.

Charles Chiapolino, head of coffee research at Dreyfus, said at a conference in Campinas, Sao Paulo state, that Brazil has vast land and the ability to produce coffee sustainably, creating favorable conditions for the coffee industry to develop.

This is a positive sign in the context of the global coffee market being hit hard by years of drought and frost in major growing regions, causing inventories to fall sharply. Increased production could help ease pressure on prices, although arabica and robusta futures prices remain at historically high levels.

Most of the new plantings in Brazil are focused on robusta, the variety used primarily in instant coffee and espresso. The shift comes after robusta futures prices rose about 40% in the past two years, boosting farmers’ incomes.

Farmers in non-traditional areas are also starting to plant robusta, said Luiz Carlos Bastianello, president of the Cooabriel cooperative in Espirito Santo state, a leading robusta grower. These new plantations are fully irrigated and replace grazing land in the north of the state.

Brazil's production expansion comes amid expected strong global demand for robusta, especially in Asian markets such as Indonesia and China, where coffee drinking and instant coffee consumption are increasingly popular.

But the dramatic increase in production also poses risks. Oscar Schaps, president of Latin America at StoneX, warned that the market could face a supply shock in the next three years as new coffee plantations begin to come into fruition.
