Paper horse dance - sacred dance of the Nung Din people in Muong Khuong

The paper horse dance is a folk art form with strong spiritual and community elements of the Nung Din people in Muong Khuong commune, Lao Cai province. It is not only a dance, but also a ritual connecting people with gods and ancestors, often taking place during village worship, praying for peace, giving thanks or funerals.

The dance is performed by a shaman, wearing traditional costumes, riding a paper horse made from bamboo and colored paper, simulating a sacred journey. The sounds of drums, gongs and prayers create a mystical atmosphere, attracting the community to participate.

Nowadays, women and young people also participate in the paper horse dance as a way to preserve heritage. For the Nung Din people in Tung Chung Pho, this is a sacred cultural feature, cherished and preserved as part of the national soul.
