Slightly high prices, but farmers are still hesitant to reinvest

According to information from the Vietnam Livestock Magazine, the price of live pigs has remained high since the beginning of the year, helping farmers achieve significant profits. However, many farmers are still cautious about restocking due to concerns about price fluctuations and the risk of disease.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Long province, pig farming is facing many favorable conditions thanks to the high price of live pigs, bringing good profits to farmers. Currently, the price of live pigs ranges from 6.7-8 million VND/quintal, an increase of about 1-1.2 million VND/quintal compared to the same period last year (calculated according to the highest price).

With an average production cost of about 5.2-5.3 million VND/quintal, farmers currently earn a profit of 1.9-2 million VND/quintal. The total pig herd in the province reached about 187,580 heads, equivalent to 97.2% of the yearly plan, an increase of 2.1% (or 3,938 heads) compared to the same period last year.

However, many farmers said that African swine fever is still complicated in some localities in the province. In addition, the unpredictable fluctuation of live pig prices makes farmers hesitant to invest in expansion.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, a pig farmer in Trung Hiep commune, Vung Liem district, shared that after selling 10 pigs for 7.8 million VND/quintal, she earned nearly 2 million VND/pig after deducting expenses. Despite the positive profit, she still does not dare to re-herd due to concerns about unstable pig prices, the risk of disease and high prices of piglets.
