Effective prevention and treatment of dermatitis in pigs
Pig dermatitis is a common problem in pig farming, especially in unsanitary environments. Identifying the cause and applying timely preventive measures are essential to protect the health of the pig herd.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Do Vo Anh Khoa, livestock expert and senior advisor at the University of Forestry, Dong Nai, pig skin is the first layer of protection exposed to elements in the barn. Agents such as feces, urine, wet bedding, cleaning chemicals or harsh sunlight can cause irritation, damage the skin and lead to inflammation. In intensive farms or unsanitary slaughterhouses, this situation is even more common, causing pig skin to lose its natural protective ability.
Dermatitis often appears on areas such as the underbelly, legs, chest or tail – areas that have prolonged contact with cage surfaces. Symptoms include:
Redness, rash, or mild swelling.
Dry, cracked or flaky skin surface.
Pus, foul odor when there is secondary infection.
Skin ulceration or necrosis in severe cases.
Piglets and pregnant sows are more susceptible due to thin skin and weakened immune systems.
