Farmers are still hesitant to use African swine fever vaccine
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, at the online seminar with the topic "African swine fever vaccine: What to do to make farmers trust and use it?", Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - representative of Hoa My Livestock Cooperative (Hanoi) - said that pig farmers are still not really assured and have not boldly applied the ASF vaccine because they still doubt the real effectiveness of the product.
Mr. Thang suggested that management agencies and businesses need to be more transparent about the protection ability of vaccines: whether the vaccine can completely prevent the virus from entering, what is the specific protection rate, and there needs to be a commitment to quality and compensation policy if risks occur.
With direct experience in animal husbandry, he also recommended that the State should promote official communication about ASF vaccines on mass media, and at the same time build a clear guarantee mechanism to ensure the rights of livestock farmers when they vaccinate according to instructions but still suffer losses. “Only with such guarantees will people dare to trust and apply vaccination widely,” he emphasized.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Tran Xuan Khuong - representative of APHARMA Company - shared that in the past, there were many vaccines of unknown origin, lacking proper instructions, causing people to lose confidence. He believes that if the vaccine is proven effective, farmers will be confident in vaccinating; on the contrary, failure will make it very difficult to regain confidence.
Recently, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and local branches have conducted disease surveillance sampling. The results show that the ASF virus exists not only in pig herds but also in the surrounding environment. With the upcoming rainy season in the North and South, the risk of disease outbreaks becomes even higher.
