On the afternoon of August 17th, at Truc Lam Yen Tu Palace, the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province held a press conference to officially announce the outstanding global value of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac complex of historical and scenic sites.

This is a significant event following the recognition of this complex as a World Cultural Heritage site by the World Heritage Committee on July 12, 2025.

This recognition is not only a source of pride for the three provinces of Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh , and the city of Hai Phong, but also affirms the unique and globally significant value of Truc Lam Buddhism.

At the press conference, the Organizing Committee provided information about the outstanding global values of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac complex of historical sites and scenic spots, which is the first and second inter-provincial heritage site in Vietnam to be recognized by UNESCO.

The recognition of heritage sites is the result of a long, persistent journey and close, effective coordination among all levels, sectors, and localities.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the vast, rugged terrain, the three localities of Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, and Hai Duong (now Quang Ninh province, Bac Ninh province, and Hai Phong city) have coordinated closely.

In particular, the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province played a leading role in organizing numerous workshops and working sessions with agencies and experts.

At the press conference, many journalists expressed interest in the process of protecting the records, as well as the process of preserving, protecting, and promoting the value of the Heritage site in the coming period.

Leaders of the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the three provinces and cities shared information on coordinating the implementation of plans and strategies for protecting, preserving, and promoting the global value of the Heritage site, as well as traditional projects to attract tourists and develop tourism.

Sharing about the arduous three-month journey of defending the Heritage dossier before the World Heritage Council, Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet, Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said that there were many difficulties and concerns, but with high determination, the Vietnamese delegation worked tirelessly, preparing all necessary documents, explanations, and answers to questions from the Council and experts.

Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet also shared more about the negotiation process with about 20 ambassadors from various countries, who have important voices in protecting the position and role of the sacred Yen Tu mountain range. He used documents, historical evidence, and cultural values to persuade the ambassadors to better understand the significance of Truc Lam Buddhism.

The Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiet Bac complex of historical sites and scenic spots, recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site according to criteria (iii) and (vi), is evidence of the unique combination of state, religion and people in forming the Vietnamese national identity; along with sacred landscapes formed through frequent and close interaction with nature and an ethical system based on love of peace, self-cultivation, tolerance, compassion and harmony between man and nature.

This heritage site is a remarkable testament to Truc Lam Buddhism, a cultural tradition of global significance founded in the 13th century by the kings and royal family of the Tran dynasty, especially Emperor Tran Nhan Tong.

This school of thought has integrated Mahayana Buddhism with Confucianism, Taoist cosmology, and the indigenous beliefs of the Vietnamese people, creating a tradition that emphasizes peace, harmony, and coexistence.

UNESCO's recognition not only acknowledges a journey of tireless effort but also affirms a vibrant cultural and spiritual heritage, offering unique and enduring contributions to humanity's cultural and spiritual heritage.
