On the evening of December 12th, in Hanoi , the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Vietnam held the award ceremony for the EU-Vietnam Sustainable Design Award (EVSDA) 2025. The event marked a significant milestone in the joint efforts between the EU and Vietnam to promote sustainable development through culture, creativity, and innovation.

The EU–Vietnam Sustainable Design Award is an initiative under the EU's Strategic Communications and Public Diplomacy Project (SCPD). EVSDA was created with the goal of honoring outstanding Vietnamese designers who use the power of creativity to promote green lifestyles, sustainable consumption, and development in harmony with the environment.

Through professional evaluation, public engagement, and international collaborations, EVSDA 2025 affirms the role of innovation as a crucial driver for sustainable development in Vietnam. Simultaneously, the award serves as a bridge connecting European and Vietnamese values, highlighting innovative ideas and communities that are contributing to shaping a more sustainable future for Vietnam.
The award, launched in May 2025, is inspired by the natural elements that are key symbols in the EU's Strategic Communication Campaign: Wind – representing creativity and uniqueness; Water – representing adaptability and applicability; and the Sun – representing sustainability and long-term value.

Speaking about the significance of the event, the European Union Ambassador to Vietnam, Julien Guerrier, shared: “Through the Global Gateway Strategy, the EU is strongly committed to cooperating with Vietnam on its green transition journey – not only in the fields of energy, infrastructure, or policy, but also in the cultural and creative sectors. Because sustainable development is not just a technological challenge; it is a transformation of the entire society. A journey that requires us to reshape habits, reimagine spaces, redesign products, and reshape lifestyles.”

According to Julien Guerrier, the Vietnamese design community is undergoing an impressive transformation. Increasingly, environmentally friendly approaches and circular thinking are becoming more evident, along with bold experiments with indigenous materials and a willingness to work together to address climate and social issues through design. This year's entries demonstrate that sustainable development is no longer an additional element but is becoming a core mindset, a foundation, and a shared value.

The EU Sustainable Design Award – Vietnam 2025 honored 20 outstanding teams across four categories: Architecture, Product Design, Communication Design, and Breakthrough Initiatives. Their works are seen as compelling examples, demonstrating how creativity can lead to environmental responsibility, adaptability, and the creation of lasting value.

The organizing committee awarded four Special Prizes to four outstanding projects in each category: the “Clay Pot House” project by NAQI & Partners (Architecture category); the “TEMPORARY” project by Trang Nguyen (Product Design category); the “Voice Gem: 1000 Year Archive” project by Trung Bao & Harry Yeff (Communication Design category); and the “Development of Compressed Reinforced Clay Bricks” project by Nguyen Van Tuan, Nguyen Trung Hieu, Nguyen Quoc Dinh, Nguyen Duy Thanh, Dirk Schwede, TH Lübeck, Nathalie Fagel (Breakthrough Innovation category).
In addition, the organizing committee also awarded prizes for Outstanding Project, Promising Design, and Audience Choice in four categories to participating projects and designs.

At the event space within the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam historical site, 79 finalist designs were displayed to celebrate the aesthetic qualities of the designs and to convey the message that design can be a driving force for significant social change.
