At this time of year, the nearly 3-hectare orange orchard of Mr. Doan Quang Huy (Kim Linh village, Kim Hoa commune) is ablaze with ripe oranges.
Mr. Huy happily stated: "This year, orange growers have faced many difficulties due to heavy rains and storms. However, thanks to careful cultivation, the estimated yield from over 400 orange trees currently ready for harvest is over 30 tons. The price of oranges is currently high, at 30-35 thousand VND/kg, so we are very excited." Huy carefully selects high-quality, golden-yellow fruits for his customers. Currently, citrus orchards in Kim Hoa commune are entering their peak harvest season. Many farmers are increasing their daily harvesting to sell their produce on the market. By applying a variety of farming methods, this year the orange trees are producing large, uniformly sized oranges with a golden yellow color, promising to bring considerable revenue to the locality from now until the Lunar New Year.
Oranges grown in Kim Hoa commune (Kim Hoa and Ham Truong communes were formerly part of Huong Son district) have a distinctive aroma and a sweet, rich flavor, making them popular with customers. Along with other farmers in the area, Mr. Nguyen Ton An (Yen Du village, Mai Hoa commune) has also entered the peak harvesting season these days. To date, Mr. An has harvested over 1 ton of oranges with a stable selling price. The orange trees are laden with fruit, bursting with vitality. As the year draws to a close, Dong Loc commune, the "capital" of crisp oranges, glows with a brilliant golden color, carrying with it the excitement and expectations of the farmers.
Dong Loc commune currently has 350 hectares of crisp oranges, mainly concentrated in the villages of Anh Hung, Khe Tho, Trai Tieu, Nam Phong, and Thanh My. The yield and quality of the oranges are consistently high, and all harvested oranges are sold immediately. Many years ago, some trees were inspected and selected by the agricultural sector as superior parent trees. Currently, crisp oranges are sold for over 50,000 VND/kg, with the "premium" variety reaching over 70,000 VND/kg; lemons are priced at around 30,000 VND/kg. The orange trees, laden with ripe, golden fruit, herald a bountiful harvest season. From now until the Lunar New Year, orange growers will continue to focus on care, adjusting fertilization and pruning to delay fruit ripening and supply large quantities to the market.
Orange orchards during the peak ripening season also become attractive "check-in" spots, drawing tourists to visit and experience them.
According to statistics from the Ha Tinh Department of Agriculture and Environment's Crop Production and Livestock Sub-department, the total area of orange cultivation in the province is over 7,400 hectares, of which approximately 6,100 hectares are ready for harvest, concentrated mainly in communes such as Vu Quang, Can Loc, Mai Hoa, and Huong Khe. This year's orange production is estimated at over 70,000 tons. Currently, some orange orchards have officially begun harvesting, and the harvest will continue until the Lunar New Year.
