In recent days, pork prices at traditional markets have been high, causing purchasing power to decrease, forcing people to find alternative food options.
Purchasing power declines
Standing in front of the pork stall, Ms. Tran Phuong Lan (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi ) hesitated because recently, the price of pork has skyrocketed, all types of meat fluctuated over 110,000 VND/kg. Previously, each time she went to the market, Ms. Lan often bought 1kg - 1.2kg of various types of meat to store in the refrigerator for a few days, but now she has reduced it to only about 7-8 ounces and bought other foods such as eggs, chicken... to replace it.
"Since meat became more expensive, I bought less. pork "I'm used to eating pork so I can't give it up. If the price increases, I'll have to eat less. Breakfast like bun cha also increases in price because the price of pork has increased," said Ms. Lan.
According to the reporter's notes, although pig price has now leveled off, no longer increasing rapidly like in the first weeks of March 2025 but still at a high level. This has caused purchasing power to decrease, and traders in traditional markets are frustrated because of the sluggishness.
According to the reporter's records on March 25, the price of lean shoulder and belly meat fluctuates around 130 - 150 thousand VND/kg, the price of rump meat is around 110 - 120 thousand VND/kg... This price is still quite high compared to the previous time.
"Recently, pork prices are high, many people are looking for other foods, so it's very quiet. Normally, I can sell one pig in just over half a day, but now I have to stay until the evening and sometimes it still doesn't sell, so I have to sell it cheaply and it's not profitable," said Ms. Ngo Thi Dinh, a market vendor in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi.
Pork prices hit highest level in 3 years
In the report on the results of the first quarter of 2025 and the key plan for the second quarter of 2025 of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, it was stated that the price of pork increased in a contrary manner compared to previous years. This is the highest price increase in the past 3 years.
Currently, the average pork price in the North ranges from 74 - 75 thousand VND/kg, in the Central region from 75 - 80 thousand VND/kg, and in the South from 80 - 81 thousand VND/kg and is forecasted to stay around this price until the end of March 2025.
According to the representative of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the price of live pigs in the country is higher than that of countries in the region such as China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar... (56 - 63 thousand VND/kg), lower than the price in the Philippines (100 - 115 thousand VND/kg).
The reason for the increase in pork prices was explained by the Department as being that in the last months of 2024, an epidemic occurred in some southern provinces, causing damage to the sow herd. The southeastern provinces have tightened environmental management, conducted a comprehensive review and planned to relocate large farms and contract farms out of areas where breeding is not allowed according to regulations, leading to many commercial farms and contract farms leaving their barns empty or not being put into operation at full capacity, leading to local shortages as they are now.
Another important reason is the positive impact of the review results on tightening imports of pigs and pork products.
In the coming time, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine will have solutions to stabilize pig farming, control the market, limit the impact of fluctuations in pork prices on CPI increases and sustainably develop the livestock and veterinary industry.
