Rice price forecast
Today, June 1st, 2026, rice prices in the Mekong Delta and nationwide remain stable. Export rice prices continue to stay high, especially for Vietnamese fragrant rice with 5% broken grains and Jasmine rice. Demand in the export market remains high, but domestic trading activity is not yet truly vibrant due to farmers' tendency to hold onto prices.
Investors are currently closely monitoring the possibility of Iraq returning to large-scale rice purchases. If new orders emerge while Thai supplies remain unchanged, prices could continue to rise sharply in the third quarter. With India maintaining export controls on certain rice varieties and extreme weather increasing in Asia, the global rice market is entering a much more sensitive phase than at the beginning of the year.
The Philippine rice industry is facing the risk of another major shock as the Department of Agriculture (DA) warns that production could fall by as much as 700,000 tons this year if El Niño intensifies as predicted.
Amid the risk of El Niño returning, the Philippines is stepping up a series of measures to protect agricultural production after the sector recently experienced a difficult period due to natural disasters.
According to the Philippine Department of Agriculture, programs to create artificial rain, install solar-powered irrigation systems, and diversify crops have been implemented in many localities to enhance resilience against the risk of drought in the coming months.
These measures are being implemented as the Philippine agricultural sector has yet to fully recover from the 2024 El Niño event, which caused record losses of 57.78 billion pesos to the agricultural sector. Furthermore, typhoons expected in late 2025 are likely to continue negatively impacting food production.
The latest figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) show that rice production in the first quarter of 2026 reached only 4.4 million tons, a 6% decrease compared to 4.7 million tons in the same period last year. This decline dragged down the total value of agricultural and fisheries production by 0.3%, to 437.52 billion pesos.
