At current prices, Vietnam's rice exports are at the lowest level among leading rice exporting countries such as Thailand and India. Notably, since the beginning of the year, the price of Vietnamese rice exports has continuously decreased and is currently the lowest in the world.
Agricultural experts believe the global rice market has just gone through a period of slower trading compared to the annual cycle. The reversal in domestic and export rice prices from the end of 2024 is attributed to oversupply in the market.
Currently, supply pressures continue to weigh heavily on the global rice market, while demand shows no signs of a strong recovery. In the short term, world rice prices are expected to remain under pressure, at least until importing countries return to increased demand.
On the other hand, while major importing countries like Indonesia and the Philippines are temporarily suspending, reducing, or delaying purchases to monitor price developments, rice production from major producing and exporting countries, especially India, is increasing sharply.
Given the sharp drop in rice prices, the Ministry of Industry and Trade advises businesses to continue closely monitoring developments in the global rice market. In particular, they should closely observe market trends, especially in major rice-exporting countries such as India and Thailand, in order to make appropriate adjustments.
To enhance export capacity and value, the domestic rice production industry needs to organize production effectively, ensure rice grain quality, build product brands, secure orders, and maintain export markets.
Furthermore, domestic businesses need to proactively diversify their markets, increasing rice exports to new markets such as Europe, the US, Japan, the Middle East, West Asia, and Africa. At the same time, they should leverage free trade agreements to both benefit from tariff preferences and expand rice exports to these new markets.
