The rice market in the Mekong Delta on May 6th recorded slight price fluctuations. While some fresh rice varieties saw a price increase, the overall price remained stable due to limited supply, resulting in relatively quiet trading activity.

Fluctuations in fresh rice prices in the Mekong Delta region.

According to updates from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, the prices of some types of fresh rice are trending upwards. Notably, OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 rice varieties both increased by 200 VND/kg. Trading activity in different localities is differentiated based on actual supply.

The rice market in the Mekong Delta recorded a slight increase in fresh paddy prices.
type of rice Price (VND/kg)
OM 18 rice 6,100 – 6,300
Dai Thom 8 rice 6,100 – 6,300
OM 5451 rice 5,600 – 5,700
IR 50404 rice 5,400 – 5,500
OM 34 rice 5,100 – 5,200

In An Giang , trading activity showed a slight improvement compared to the previous week. However, in Can Tho, fresh paddy became scarce, forcing some businesses to switch to purchasing dried paddy such as Dai Thom 8 and Japonica. Meanwhile, areas such as Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Ca Mau, and Tay Ninh recorded slow transactions and little price fluctuation due to limited supply.

Prices of raw rice and finished rice remain stable.

For rice, export prices for raw materials continue to remain stable. Specifically, IR 504 rice ranges from 8,600 to 8,700 VND/kg; CL 555 rice is at 9,000 to 9,200 VND/kg. High-quality rice varieties such as OM 18 are priced at 8,700 to 8,850 VND/kg and Dai Thom 8 at 9,200 to 9,400 VND/kg. Finished IR 504 rice is traded around 10,750 to 10,900 VND/kg.

In the retail market, the prices of common rice varieties have not changed much:

  • Nang Nhen rice: 28,000 VND/kg (highest price).
  • Fragrant rice (Jasmine rice, Nang Hoa rice, Japanese rice): 21,000 – 22,000 VND/kg.
  • Common white rice: 16,000 VND/kg.
  • Jasmine rice: 13,000 – 14,000 VND/kg.

The glutinous rice segment also recorded a sideways trend. Fresh IR 4625 glutinous rice was priced at 7,300 – 7,500 VND/kg, while dried glutinous rice ranged from 9,500 – 9,700 VND/kg.

Export markets and international competitive pressures

On the export market, Vietnamese rice prices continue to remain high but are facing significant competition from other supplying countries such as Thailand and India. Currently, Vietnamese Jasmine rice is being offered at $496-$500/ton, 5% broken rice at $490-$500/ton, and 100% broken rice ranging from $335-$339/ton.

Compared to competitors, Vietnam's prices are currently significantly higher. In Thailand, 5% broken rice is priced at only $390-$394 per ton. In India, the figure is even lower, fluctuating around $349-$353 per ton for 5% broken rice. This disparity requires domestic export businesses to adjust their strategies accordingly to maintain market share.
