This year, the prolonged heat has caused most crops such as coffee, durian, pepper, and even rubber trees to lose a lot of strength. In many places, rubber is grown on hillsides or in sandy soil, so it dies. However, compared to other crops, rubber is still more drought-resistant, so the damage is less. This year is different from many previous years, that is, in mid-June, just entering the rubber latex tapping season, but traders have already placed orders at a high price of over 38 million VND/ton, farmers are very excited because the rubber price is near the peak of 39 million VND 6 years ago (2018).
Mr. Nguyen Tuyen in Lac Tanh town has more than 10 hectares of rubber planted in Gia Huynh area. He said that after the harsh sunlight, the exhausted rubber trees had not yet recovered. For the past half month, there has been a tropical depression and continuous rain, so the price of rubber is high, so some days they can tap latex, some days they can't because of the rain. Talking about the price of rubber latex which has been higher than 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Son in Suoi Kiet said: “It is rare to see early season rubber latex being offered at such a high price. Last year, the early season latex price was low at 23-24 million VND/ton, so many gardeners with large rubber areas only fertilized sparingly, because tapping latex would not be enough to cover labor and management costs. For small-scale households, tapping latex is a way to make a profit. This year, right from the beginning of the season, traders offered a price of 38 million VND/ton, and a week ago the price fluctuated at 40-41 million VND/ton, so rubber growers focused on fertilizing to take advantage of tapping latex”…

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province currently has about 45,000 hectares of rubber, of which nearly 2/3 of the area is for harvest, with an average latex yield of 14-15 quintals/ha, and in places with good soil and proper care, the yield is 18 quintals/ha. In the province, there are about 10 large and small establishments that buy and process rubber latex, mostly concentrated in Tanh Linh and Duc Linh. Assessing the increase in rubber latex prices, a leader of the Vietnam Rubber Group said that due to strong fluctuations in the international market, countries in the region have reduced their supply, so the demand for rubber latex exports has increased. Rubber latex prices depend largely on export sources. If there are many export orders, the price will increase, especially at the beginning of the season when goods are scarce, so many companies collect goods to meet the order quantity...
In Binh Thuan, there is currently a situation where some gardeners cannot tap latex because many years ago they "injected air" into the trees to get more latex. This year, although the latex price is high, the exhausted trees have to rest. Mr. Ngoc in Duc Phu, Tanh Linh has over 3 hectares of rubber. A few years ago, when latex was priced at 31-32 million VND/ton, he "injected air" into the rubber trees to get more latex, so this year the exhausted trees cannot be tapped. "We have to nurture the trees for 2 years before harvesting again, but I believe that the latex price will increase even more in the coming years because countries in the region such as Thailand, Malaysia, etc. have cut down many rubber areas to grow durian, so the latex supply to the world market is in short supply. Therefore, the latex price this year will not only surpass the peak of 39 million VND in 2018, but will increase even higher," Mr. Ngoc added.
