DNVN - On January 15, 2025, coffee prices continued to decline, ranging from 114,700 to 115,500 VND/kg. Pepper prices decreased significantly from 1,000 to 2,000 VND/kg compared to the previous day.
Coffee prices continue to fall
Robusta coffee prices on the London floor at 5:00 a.m. on January 15, 2025 showed a downward trend extending into the third trading session of the week. The recorded prices were: 4,863 USD/ton (delivered in March 2025), 4,796 USD/ton (delivered in May 2025), 4,722 USD/ton (delivered in July 2025), and 4,642 USD/ton (delivered in September 2025).
Meanwhile, New York Arabica coffee is no exception to this trend. The recorded futures prices are 321.95 cents/lb (March 2025), 318.00 cents/lb (May 2025), 312.00 cents/lb (July 2025), and 304.35 cents/lb (September 2025).
Brazilian Arabica coffee prices also decreased slightly, with the following maturities: USD 403.50/ton (March 2025), USD 400.00/ton (May 2025), USD 388.30/ton (July 2025), and USD 375.70/ton (September 2025).
Domestically, coffee prices at 5:00 a.m. on January 15, 2025 were stable at an average of VND115,300/kg. In Dak Lak and Gia Lai, the common price was VND115,200/kg, while in Dak Nong , the highest price reached VND115,500/kg.
Despite stable harvests, farmers’ temporary reluctance to sell has reduced domestic transactions. This has also contributed to Vietnam’s coffee export volume in the fourth quarter of 2024 falling more than 40% compared to the same period last year.
During the same period, Vietnam exported 208,000 tons of coffee, earning $1.16 billion. Compared to 2023, the export volume decreased by 44%, but the value increased by 4%.
During the decade from 2012 to 2022, domestic coffee prices fluctuated only between VND35,000-40,000/kg. However, by the end of April 2024, this price skyrocketed to nearly VND135,000/kg, and remained above VND120,000/kg until the end of the year, an increase of nearly 80% compared to the beginning of the year.
Experts say one of the factors driving up coffee prices is rising transportation costs, especially after the conflict across the Red Sea in late 2023, which increased transportation costs by up to 60% and extended delivery times.
Pepper prices fell sharply
By 5:00 a.m. on January 15, 2025, domestic pepper prices had dropped to 145,000 - 147,000 VND/kg. In Gia Lai and Dak Lak , pepper prices had dropped by 2,000 VND/kg, to only 145,000 VND/kg. Dak Nong province recorded a decrease of 1,200 VND/kg, with the current price at 146,000 VND/kg.
In the Southeast region, Binh Phuoc pepper price decreased by 1,000 VND/kg, to 146,000 VND/kg. In Ba Ria - Vung Tau alone, the price remained stable at 147,000 VND/kg.
According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), world pepper prices continued to increase slightly on January 15, 2025. Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices are currently at 7,162 USD/ton (up 7 USD), while Muntok white pepper is at 9,257 USD/ton (up 9 USD).
In Malaysia, ASTA black pepper prices were stable at USD 8,700/ton, while ASTA white pepper prices remained at USD 11,100/ton. Similarly, Brazilian pepper prices remained stable at USD 6,350/ton.
In Vietnam, pepper export prices continued to increase slightly. Black pepper 500g/l reached $6,350/ton, 550g/l was $6,650/ton, and white pepper is currently traded at $9,550/ton.
Although domestic pepper prices have fallen sharply, expectations of a price increase after Tet have slowed down trading. However, export pepper supply is limited in the first two months of 2025 due to unfavorable weather conditions that delayed the harvest season.
In 2024, the US will continue to be Vietnam's largest pepper import market with 73,710 tons, worth 407.6 million USD, accounting for 29.5% in volume and 31% in value of total exports. Compared to 2023, these figures increased by 34% and 84.2% respectively.
