Durian exports face big challenges

At the workshop “Sustainable development of the durian industry” organized by Tien Phong Newspaper on June 10, Mr. Vu Duy Hai - General Director of Vinacam - commented that durian was once expected to be a key export product, with the potential to contribute up to 1.6% of Vietnam's GDP.

However, the target of reaching a turnover of 3.7 billion USD by 2025 is facing serious barriers, especially shipments being returned from the Chinese market due to chemical residue exceeding the permitted threshold.

According to the Plant Protection Department, since March 2024, China has repeatedly warned about the cadmium and yellow O content in Vietnamese durian. Investigation results show that the cause comes from both natural factors and farming impacts.

Some growing areas have soils that naturally accumulate cadmium; at the same time, excessive use of fertilizers and lack of crop rotation have caused cadmium residues to exceed the permissible limit.

Regarding yellow O - a substance commonly used in post-harvest treatment - China added strict control regulations not only for Vietnam but for all exporting countries, due to the discovery of high residues on Thai durian.

However, after signing the Official Export Protocol with China, the Vietnamese durian industry has made a strong breakthrough. In 2023, the export turnover reached more than 2 billion USD, and in 2024 it jumped to over 3.2 billion USD, accounting for 45% of the total export value of the entire fruit and vegetable industry.

However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned that the risk of overheated growth could lead to loss of quality control, damaging the industry's reputation.

Experts say that in order for the durian industry to develop sustainably, Vietnam needs to strengthen quality control in growing areas, strengthen management of area codes and monitor the use of chemicals in cultivation - especially in the context of import markets increasingly tightening technical barriers.
