According to data from Kaspersky's Digital Footprint Intelligence, cybercriminal activity is increasing on Telegram, through the establishment of specialized channels and groups to discuss scams, share stolen data, and provide a variety of illegal services, such as illegal withdrawals, document forgery, and DDoS attacks.
In May and June 2024 alone, the number of posts related to these activities increased by 53% compared to the same period last year.
Kaspersky's analysis shows that the number of cybercriminals using Telegram as a platform to conduct transactions, buying and selling goods or services is increasing.
Alexey Bannikov, analyst at Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence, explains that there are several key factors that make cybercriminals increasingly active on Telegram.
First, it's a very popular messaging app with 900 million monthly users.
Second, Telegram promotes itself as the most secure and independent messaging app, which does not collect user data. This makes attackers feel more secure, able to act freely without fear of being detected.
Additionally, finding or creating a community on Telegram is also quite easy. The combination of these factors has made Telegram, including cybercriminal channels, quickly attract a large number of users.”
Cybercriminals operating on Telegram are typically less technically skilled and experienced than those operating on more limited, specialized dark web forums.
This is because it is quite easy to join the underground community on Telegram. Malicious actors simply create an account and join any channel or group related to criminal activity they find on Telegram.
Furthermore, Telegram lacks a reputation rating system like other dark web forums. As a result, scams are common on Telegram, affecting many members using the platform.
“Telegram has recently become a platform for hacktivists to express their political views and positions. Taking advantage of Telegram’s large user base and ability to quickly disseminate content, hacktivists use the platform as a powerful tool to incite DDoS attacks and other destructive methods against target infrastructure,” said Alexey Bannikov.
Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence has released a comprehensive and free guide to help businesses track illegal purchases, transactions, and exchanges of goods, as well as handle data-related incidents, thereby minimizing associated cyber risks.
