In the world market, gold prices fell for the second consecutive day on July 24 as signs of easing global trade tensions weakened demand for safe-haven assets.
At 0:45 a.m. on July 25 (Vietnam time), spot gold prices fell 0.5% to $3,370.69/ounce. US gold futures closed down 0.7% to $3,373.5/ounce.
Market optimism about trade deals between the US and other countries - first with Japan, and now possibly with the European Union - is building, said Aakash Doshi of State Street Investment Management, adding that strong and low volatility in equity markets has kept gold's gains in check.
The US and EU are making progress toward a trade deal that could include a 15% base US tariff on EU goods, the sources said, after Washington announced a separate deal with Japan earlier this week.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's surprise move to visit the US Federal Reserve (Fed) later in the day added uncertainty to the country's policy outlook.
The move comes as Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for not cutting interest rates more aggressively. Mr Doshi believes that any potential interference with the Fed’s independence is a supportive factor for gold in the medium to long term.
The Fed is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its July 29-30 meeting, but markets are still pricing in a September rate cut. Gold is sensitive to US interest rate moves, as lower rates weaken the dollar and increase the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold.
On the data front, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, signaling a strengthening labor market, despite slowing hiring that makes it harder for unemployed people to find work.
