A US Coast Guard inspection team rescued a dog that had been trapped for over a week in a container on a cargo ship at a port in Texas.
On January 31, a US Coast Guard inspection team randomly selected thousands of containers at the port in Houston for inspection, US media reported on February 4. They heard barking and scratching sounds coming from containers stacked nearly eight meters high.
The inspection team had to use a crane to lower the container. When the door opened, a dog ran out. "It was exhausted, hungry, and thirsty, but very happy to see the people who had rescued it," according to a Facebook post by the coast guard.
The video shared with the post shows the dog wagging its tail, sniffing around, and drinking water after being rescued.

Coast Guard officials determined that the dog, now named Connie, had been stranded for at least eight days without food or water. It was emaciated and had a matted coat.
Authorities said the container, which contained decommissioned vehicles from the Houston-Galveston area, was en route to be sold for parts overseas. It's possible Connie was in the car at the junkyard when she was accidentally placed inside the container and became trapped. Without rescue, Connie could have been stuck in the container for another week before the cargo ship arrived, and would have gone without food for two weeks.
The inspection team took Connie to an animal rescue center, where she received care, treatment for heartworm, and awaited adoption. Many social media users expressed their desire to adopt Connie.
