"Rescuing" new mothers from the nightmare of postpartum hemorrhoids.

Việt NamViệt Nam21/10/2024

For new mothers, postpartum hemorrhoids are a constant source of anxiety, yet they often find it difficult to talk about. The pain and the added burden of caring for their children cause many women to grit their teeth and endure the suffering, with the pressure mounting over time.
Afraid to treat hemorrhoids because of the burden of caring for her young child… Patient PVT (30 years old, Tay Ho, Hanoi ) confided: “After giving birth to my second child, I felt like I had completed my mission, but I couldn't feel relieved because of the hemorrhoids.” Ms. T. said that since giving birth to her first child, hemorrhoids had appeared. During her second pregnancy, she frequently experienced heavy bleeding from the anus, and the hemorrhoids prolapsed with increasing frequency. After giving birth, the hemorrhoids were constantly prolapsed, making the time spent caring for her children even more difficult: “Sitting down to breastfeed was extremely difficult, the pain was like torture. The hemorrhoids were almost completely protruding, and I had to sit cautiously, tiptoeing to avoid the discomfort and burning sensation.” The ordeal reached its peak: “Every time I went to the toilet, tears and snot streamed down my face because… it hurt so much.” Despite the pain, Ms. T. hadn't sought treatment immediately, partly because she was hesitant to talk about and share her private condition, and partly because she was preoccupied with caring for her children and hadn't had time to pay attention to herself. In particular, she shared her fear: "I'm afraid of the pain of surgery to treat hemorrhoids, especially if I have to stay in the hospital for a long time, which is impossible because my children are still too young." Unexpectedly, Ms. T. received help from her cousin, Ms. N. (35 years old, Hanoi), who understood and empathized with her and recommended a place for hemorrhoid treatment. Ms. N., also a postpartum hemorrhoid patient, had successfully treated her hemorrhoids at Thu Cúc TCI International General Hospital. With her positive experience there, Ms. N. readily shared her experience and wholeheartedly assisted Ms. T. in registering for examination and treatment. At Thu Cúc TCI International General Hospital, Ms. T. was received, diagnosed, and advised on treatment methods by Dr. Le Tu Anh, Department of Surgery. Upon examination, the doctor stated that the patient had grade 3 internal hemorrhoids with multiple anal folds of excess skin. Endoscopy revealed bleeding hemorrhoids. The doctor added: "In this patient's case, at grade 3, medical treatment with medication is no longer very effective and immediate surgical intervention is needed to avoid complications." According to the doctor, hemorrhoids are common in postpartum women due to several factors, including physiological changes and pressure during pregnancy. As the fetus develops, pressure on the pelvic and rectal veins increases, causing varicose veins and the formation of hemorrhoids. In addition, weight gain and increased blood flow to the pelvis during pregnancy also contribute to this condition. Treatment of hemorrhoids in postpartum women requires more attention than in other individuals due to the fear of surgery after childbirth, especially the psychological impact on the baby. "Choosing a minimally invasive method with a quick recovery time should be a priority when selecting treatment," shared Dr. Le Tu Anh.

Hemorrhoid Relief in Just 1 Day: Restoring the Joy of Motherhood. Patient PVT was treated with Laser Diode hemorrhoid removal at Thu Cúc TCI. Under spinal anesthesia, patient T. began the hemorrhoid removal procedure. The treatment took approximately 30 minutes and went smoothly; patient T. remained alert and conversed comfortably throughout the process. Regarding this case, Dr. Le Tu Anh stated: “Choosing Laser Diode was the best solution for patient T., whose internal hemorrhoids were in stage 3. The patient was very afraid of pain and wanted the fastest possible treatment to have time to care for her young child.” This is currently an advanced technique in hemorrhoid treatment, characterized by minimal invasiveness and the absence of conventional surgical instruments. Explaining the method, the doctor said: “Laser Diode uses laser energy to collapse hemorrhoid tissue and cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, causing them to shrink without the need for surgery.” From the patient's perspective, Ms. T. expressed satisfaction: "While undergoing the procedure, I chatted with the doctor about how to neatly suture the excess skin. After 5-6 hours, I was able to walk around. Overall, the hemorrhoid cauterization was very pleasant, with no pain at all." However, she also regretted not seeking treatment sooner: "If I had known that hemorrhoid cauterization was so effective and cured in just one day, I wouldn't have let the condition persist. My child only needed to be left with grandparents for a day." She added humorously, "After the treatment, I'm so happy to be back in my role as a mother!"

Laser Diode hemorrhoidectomy technology has been effectively applied by surgeons at Thu Cúc TCI International General Hospital, successfully treating hundreds of patients, including many postpartum hemorrhoids. Besides its ability to intervene in the early stages of the disease, this technology has many outstanding advantages such as being painless, bloodless, allowing patients to walk easily after a few hours, and discharge after only one day. This technique is currently applied in relatively few hospitals due to the requirement for modern equipment and, especially, the need for strong expertise and absolute precision from the medical team.
