The tournament has created opportunities for competition and professional development; at the same time, it helps discover talents and select players for the national team, aiming to achieve high results in international tournaments in the future.

New playground for Hanoi sports
The first Hanoi Wushu Open Tournament in 2025, organized by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, took place from May 27 to 30 at the Dong Anh District Gymnasium (Hanoi). The tournament attracted nearly 200 athletes from 16 units of provinces, cities and sectors in the Northern region. The athletes competed for 33 sets of medals, bringing beautiful, dramatic and emotional performances. At the end of the tournament, the Organizing Committee recognized units with strong and potential athletes who could supplement the national team such as Hanoi, Army, Thanh Hoa, Tuyen Quang, Thai Binh ...
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Pham Xuan Tai, Head of the Organizing Committee, said that the tournament was organized at the right scale of a national tournament. Hundreds of matches took place, creating opportunities for athletes to compete, while also helping coaches find the next generation for the national wushu team. This is not only a grassroots playground for wushu athletes, but also a "nursery" for high-performance sports - where young talents are discovered, tested and nurtured to move towards bigger arenas in the future.
According to Head of Wushu Department, Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center (Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports), and coach of the national Wushu team, Phan Quoc Vinh, organizing a grassroots tournament but with a scale and quality not inferior to professional tournaments has created excitement for wushu athletes in the localities to practice.
“Last year, despite being the leader of Vietnamese wushu, the athletes of the Hanoi wushu team only practiced with each other all year round. There were only 2-3 tournaments in the country, not enough to meet the needs of competition and competition for athletes. Not to mention the increasingly rare overseas training trips due to the financial mechanism and limited budget of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department. Therefore, a local tournament like the Hanoi Wushu Open Tournament being organized professionally at the same level as a national tournament is a good opportunity for martial artists to compete and improve their professional skills,” said coach Phan Quoc Vinh.
Warm-up for SEA Games 33
Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Management (Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports) Dao Quoc Thang said that after the Hanoi Wushu Open Tournament was included in the 2025 competition program of Hanoi Sports, many local sports have completed the budget planning stage. However, with 200 athletes from 16 units registering to participate in the grassroots and advanced competition, it shows the interest and enthusiasm of the participating delegations. Hopefully, when the tournament is held annually, more units register to participate, the Organizing Committee can expand the scale of the tournament nationwide.
Meanwhile, coach of the Vietnamese wushu team Phan Quoc Vinh expressed that the team has gathered and trained at the Hanoi National Training Center (Nhon). Immediately after the first Hanoi Wushu Open Tournament in 2025 ends, the athletes will return to prepare to participate in the 2025 National Youth Wushu Tournament (June 2025) in Lao Cai province. Through the competition process, the coaching board will select outstanding faces to supplement the national team towards the goal of the 33rd SEA Games taking place at the end of this year in Thailand.
Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Management Dao Quoc Thang said that the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports and the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center will coordinate with other parties to find financial resources, organize more tournaments as well as training courses, train coaches and referees, and support schools to easily access and develop wushu. At the same time, the Department will support the construction and development of wushu clubs in districts, towns and cities in the capital, taking the grassroots movement as the foundation for developing high-performance sports.
Meanwhile, Vu Van Trung, head of the wushu department, Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), said that he will advise the Department's leaders to coordinate with localities to create more wushu playgrounds, thereby helping athletes compete and discovering more young talents for national team levels.
Hopefully, with the synchronous implementation of solutions and the joint efforts of managers and experts, young Vietnamese wushu athletes will make their mark on the international and regional arenas in the near future.
