Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, many online competitions on traffic safety, happy school voting activities, etc. have been assigned to teachers in many schools. Many teachers said that they are busy with the competitions, with texting students (in fact, asking their parents) to take the exam so that their homeroom teacher's class can be recognized for their achievements.
Although the Ministry of Education and Training has made efforts to reduce extra-professional pressure on teachers such as reducing paperwork, school competitions, etc., at educational institutions, many teachers still have to take on extra tasks such as collecting fees from students, urging enrollment, participating in movement activities, participating in competitions inside and outside the industry, etc.
Not only teachers at the primary level, but also university and college lecturers complain about having to do work and endure pressures outside of their expertise such as formal competitions and movements to compete for school achievements. In parent groups, teachers also require their children to take screenshots after taking the above online test and send them to the teacher so that the teacher can report to the school...
According to some teachers we have recorded in localities, when innovating programs, textbooks, and student assessment, teachers have had to make great efforts to adapt to the new points. However, there is another pressure that consumes more time and effort, which is a series of competitions, including online competitions organized by sectors and levels, that teachers have to participate in - while the main task of teachers is to teach. It is worth mentioning that there are many competitions that have nothing to do with teaching. This makes it difficult for teachers to focus on professional activities.
In fact, requiring teachers to respond to and participate in too many competitions/contests is a manifestation of the disease of movement, achievement, following the crowd mentality, affecting the quality and effectiveness of performing professional pedagogical tasks of the teaching staff. Not to mention, outside of class time, when stepping out of the school gate, each teacher also has to face and solve many problems in life. It is worth mentioning that if they only care about professional work, ignoring the above-mentioned competitive activities, no matter how good they are at teaching, it will be difficult for teachers to achieve excellence, difficult to enjoy the highest level of additional income. Therefore, even though they do not want to participate in extra-professional activities, many teachers still have to try, which reduces their passion for the profession, and loses motivation and time for teaching.
In a report on the challenges of mental health care for teachers, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam - Vice Principal of the University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) pointed out that 41.1% of teachers began to show noticeable signs, 22% of teachers were at high risk of mental health damage and about 6.1% of teachers had poor mental health. A survey of the mental health status of teachers in some localities such as Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Ho Chi Minh City also pointed out the main causes leading to this situation including overload of work tasks, not feeling recognized for completed tasks; not being able to balance time between life and work, unfriendly behaviors from students and parents...
Realizing that negative side, at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City requested to streamline unnecessary competitions for primary school teachers so that teachers have time and effort to focus on improving their professional pedagogical quality. This move by the education sector in the locality with the second largest number of general education teachers in the country is a timely and necessary action to reduce the workload for teachers.
School psychologists say that to reduce pressure on teachers, comprehensive solutions are needed and must be implemented over a long period of time. The root of the problem is still improving the income of the teaching staff.
