Amidst the wave of technological innovation in China, an “idol” is emerging that many young people in the country admire. That is lecturer Wu Yiquan of Zhejiang University. He is both an expert in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) research and a star on the basketball court.
Wu Yiquan specializes in developing language for AI in the legal field, and is also a basketball star in Zhejiang Province. Yiquan currently teaches at the School of Law at Zhejiang University.

Standing at 1.8m tall, Wu Yiquan has recently attracted attention after continuously shining with the basketball club he joined in the Zhejiang Provincial Basketball Tournament.
It is known that he was the captain of the Zhejiang University men's basketball team for 5 years. Even as a student, he was honored as "Outstanding Athlete" by the Chinese University Basketball Association for 3 consecutive years.
Sharing with Chinese media about his passion for scientific research and playing sports, Diec Toan said that these two fields have similarities.
“The most fascinating thing about basketball is the unpredictability. Pre-game analysis is often far from the reality on the court. Sports always require the ability to react quickly.
In research, it is also necessary to stay calm and have a positive mindset when facing challenges encountered during the research process," Diec Toan analyzed.
This young lecturer also shared that many young scholars he met had very interesting personalities, had their own identities, and pursued many different interests besides their research careers. According to Diec Pham, if we dig deeper, the media will know many more interesting characters.
“For me, scientific research does not occupy all my attention, nor is it an absolute priority. Pursuing other interests and passions will help develop a comprehensive personality and broaden each person's perspective when facing problems in study, work or life,” the teacher added.
Wu Yiquan studied from undergraduate to doctoral level in computer science at Zhejiang University. He successfully defended his doctoral thesis earlier this year and was evaluated by the school as having completed the training program excellently.

Currently, he leads a project to build an AI language model in the legal field, to support users in searching for legal knowledge, analyzing case information, and drafting legal documents. The project is co-developed by Zhejiang University and several other units.
For example, when a user asks how to get back money from online fraud, the chatbot created by Diec Toan and his team can suggest the user to take the following four steps: save the chat history and transfer information, report to the police, request legal support, and file a civil lawsuit after the investigation by the authorities has yielded results.
