The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that from now until the end of the year, food prices in general and pork prices in particular will tend to stabilize due to abundant supply and stable demand thanks to the maintenance of domestic raw material prices.
Looking back at the price of live pigs since the beginning of the year, it can be seen that from January, the price of live pigs recovered (52,500 VND/kg) and tended to gradually increase, reaching its peak in June at 68,500 VND/kg.
From June until now, pig farming has tended to reduce herd sizes, so towards the end of July, the price of live pigs nationwide decreased by 0.4 – 1.6% compared to the average in June, but still remained high at 64,000 – 66,500 VND/kg, with some places and days even reaching over 70,000 VND/kg. At this price level, pig farmers are making a profit.
According to the Vietnam Livestock Association, in 2024, the price of live pigs in Vietnam will be about 12% higher than the average price of 2023. With an average price of around 62,000 VND/kg, farmers will achieve a profit of 1.5 - 2 million VND per pig when selling to the market. The reason for the increase in live pig prices is due to a decrease in supply, not an increase in market demand.
