In just about a month, more than 100,000 grade 9 students in Hanoi will take the 10th grade entrance exam with three tests: Math, Literature, and English. The Math test will last 120 minutes.
This year, the national 10th grade entrance exam is quite special because this is the first year students take the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program.
Right from the beginning of the school year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the exam structure and sample questions for students to gradually get acquainted with, in which the knowledge stream includes: Numbers and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Statistics and Probability.
The math exam for the 10th grade entrance exam under the new general education program will test mathematical thinking and reasoning, problem solving and mathematical modeling. Math teachers say that the exam has many practical questions, requiring students to have the ability to think and do the test carefully.
Regrettable mistakes that make students lose points
Ms. Dang Van Thuy, Head of the Math Group, Secondary School, Luong The Vinh Secondary School - High School (Hanoi) pointed out mistakes that many students often make, causing them to lose points regrettably and need to be noted.
According to Ms. Thuy, when doing an exam, students often make mistakes such as: Lack of determining conditions for simplification, solving equations, and practical problems; lack of units in practical problems. Many students do it correctly but lack the steps of reasoning, lack of explanation of the basis for the results using equation solving, geometry problems; rounding numbers incorrectly, not paying attention to the approximation sign of spatial geometry problems.

There are also many students who use the wrong formulas because there are many similar formulas. Therefore, in the learning process, students need to understand the nature of each formula, see the similarities and differences between those formulas.
“In particular, there are also students who are careless, when they hold the question paper they don't read it carefully and rush to do it, leading to mistakes or the question has two parts but they only do one part, find the integer value of x but don't pay attention to the integer value…”, Ms. Thuy said.
Based on the sample exam paper published by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the new point of this year's exam is the content of statistics and probability. This is an important part, accounting for 1.5 points.
"Students often make mistakes when calculating probability because they cannot distinguish the difference between the probability of performing one action and the probability of performing two consecutive actions. For example, choosing each marble twice in a row is different from choosing two marbles at the same time...", she said.
Effective ways to review
In the final stage, with only 4 weeks left before the exam, Ms. Thuy showed this year's 9th grade students experience and effective ways to review for the Math exam.
According to the teacher, this is the stage of general review and knowledge review, so students should review each topic, associated with each type of question on the exam.
When practicing on their own, students should refer to and do tests with answers and detailed scoring tables. After finishing, compare with the answers to know the main ideas, important milestones that are scored and thereby also know the places where they often lose points to gain experience for the official test.
One thing students need to note is that they can rely on their 9th grade math final score and the results of the tests to know which group their learning ability belongs to, thereby having effective review solutions.
In case you are a good student with a stable test score of around 9 points, then focus on practicing high-level application questions. If you are in the group with weaker academic performance, you should focus on practicing how to present your essay, pay attention to correcting mistakes that often cause you to lose points to get a solid score on recognition and comprehension questions, and not focus too much on high-level application questions...
With many years of experience teaching and reviewing students for exams, Ms. Thuy also pointed out experiences in taking the Math exam to achieve high scores.
She believes that to get the best score in the 10th grade entrance exam, the first thing is to keep a steady mind when entering the exam room and even when holding the exam paper in hand to read the paper carefully to avoid mistakes.
“When encountering a strange question, students need to calmly read the question carefully, connect it with known types of questions to find common points, similarities, and then find a solution. With these questions, students should pay attention that they do not need to complete the whole question to present it on the test, but should present each idea to get points for that idea,” said Ms. Thuy.
Second, students do not necessarily do the questions in order, but should do them according to the principle of doing the easy questions first, then the difficult ones; doing the familiar questions first, then the unfamiliar ones. First, do not lose points on the recognition and comprehension questions, then do the high-level application questions.
While doing the test, you must always pay attention to avoid the mistakes you often make during your studies and the mistakes that have been deducted points in tests and surveys.
Pay attention to doing well the practical application questions.
The Math exam for this year's entrance exam has many practical questions. The teacher noted that to do well in this type of question, students must have practical knowledge related to topics such as: Bank interest rates, production costs, revenue, profit, etc.
This requires students to learn through teachers, friends, mass media as well as through the system of illustrative and reference questions of the Department, Departments of Education and Training and schools. With this problem, the new question stops at the level of requiring students to understand some simple practical problems.
The most important thing in this type of exercise is that you must be able to translate the real-life problem into a familiar mathematical model, which usually has the following steps:
+ Determine the quantity the question asks about, usually called the unknown. This step requires attention to the unit and condition of the unknown.
+ Represent unknown quantities in terms of unknowns and known quantities.
+ Use formulas to calculate and establish relationships between quantities using equations and inequalities.
+ Solve basic equations, or use familiar inequalities and then give answers to real-world problems.
