Born into a family with no artistic background, Thuy Phuong was fascinated by the organ from a young age. In 10th grade, she developed a passion for the guitar and quickly mastered it. Now, in addition to teaching at school, she also runs classes teaching piano, guitar, and vocal music to people of all ages, from four-year-olds to those in their sixties. For her, music is not just about musical notes, but also about nurturing the soul. In each lesson, she not only imparts skills but also conveys her love for her homeland through songs and stories about Vietnamese culture and people.
It wasn't until 2020 that Thùy Phương began composing, for a very simple reason – students had few new songs to perform during school events and festivals. So she started writing music, songs specifically for these events, like songs for young children, with gentle melodies, easy to sing, easy to remember, and suitable for the hearts of school-aged children. These early compositions gently spread and quietly gained recognition, not only helping students love music more, but also instilling in them pride in their school, hometown, and country.
Also that year, she participated in a children's songwriting competition for the first time and won first prize. Composer Van Dinh, a judge in the competition, even came to her school to film and encouraged her to join the Hue City Music Association. After joining the association, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, she continued to compose. Her songs about pandemic prevention and control were not negative; on the contrary, they had a cheerful tone, conveying positive energy, and were well received by many. She believed that music is also a spiritual medicine that helps people overcome challenges. Two years later, she won second prize in the "I Love Hue" songwriting competition.
2024 marked a major turning point when she was admitted to the Vietnam Musicians Association. In the same year, she received the C Prize at the Hue Imperial City Literature and Arts Awards; and won third prize in the "Song of Unification" songwriting competition organized by Ho Chi Minh City Television and the Vietnam Musicians Association (there was no first prize awarded). Her works during this period were not only artistic creations but also messages of unity, faith, and unwavering love for the homeland.
Recently, she was one of 10 singers/musicians selected to participate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' delegation visiting Truong Sa island district and the DK1 platform.
During a night stop on Sinh Ton Island, deeply moved by the feelings and circumstances of the young soldiers in their late teens and early twenties, she wrote the song "Truong Sa, Land of Memories" that very night. Musician Xuan Minh assisted with the arrangement and recording right on the ship. The next day, the song was performed for the first time before the soldiers and people on the island, receiving a particularly positive response and empathy. The song touched the hearts of listeners with its melody, conveying a profound sense of the sacred meaning of the word "Homeland".
From the small classroom where the sound of music resonates every afternoon, to the journeys across the seas to Truong Sa, Thuy Phuong's music always carries a red thread: love for her homeland, its people, and her country. And her successes are the driving force that helps her overcome all difficulties, persistently composing and teaching. For her, music is not just a profession, but a mission. Each song, each lesson, is an opportunity to sow seeds of love for music, so that one day, they will sprout into love for her homeland in the hearts of her listeners.
