New research has investigated the link between sleep timing and heart health.

The authors analyzed data from 88,000 older participants aged 43–74, from the UK Biobank, who were followed for about seven years.

Participants wore monitors to record their bedtimes and wake-ups, and they also answered questions about their lifestyle habits.

During follow-up, 3,172 people developed heart and circulatory disease.

The results found that people who slept between 22 and 23 hours had the lowest risk of heart and blood circulation diseases, according to the Express newspaper.

Conversely, people who typically sleep 23 to 24 hours a day have a 12% higher risk of heart disease.

Notably, people who went to bed after 24 hours had a 25% increased risk of heart disease.

Why is sleep timing important?

These findings clearly show that going to bed between 10pm and 11pm may be the optimal time for long-term heart health, said Regina Giblin, senior cardiologist at the British Heart Foundation.

Getting enough sleep is important for overall health as well as heart health and circulation, and most older adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, the expert said.

But sleep is not the only factor that can affect the heart. It is also important to consider lifestyle, indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, diet..., to ensure a healthy heart, according to Express.
