Coach Michel has yet to help Girona escape their crisis. |
2025 is proving to be a nightmare for Girona FC. The team that once shook LaLiga and entered the Champions League with the pride of a challenger is now struggling to survive. Their position in the relegation zone is no longer a short-term setback, but the consequence of a prolonged decline where problems have piled up and remained unresolved.
The familiar trap of "dark horse" teams has fallen on Montilivi. After a historic season, Girona entered the Champions League with limited resources but high expectations. A packed schedule, increased pressure, and a thin squad gradually revealed their limitations. Their early elimination from Europe didn't ease the burden; instead, it led to a decline in La Liga. At the end of last season, Girona only avoided relegation by beating a Valladolid team that had given up. Two wins in the final 16 rounds served as a warning, but it wasn't heeded properly.
Summer 2025 should have been a time for a mental refresh. That didn't happen. Girona started the new season in dismal form, with only one win in 11 matches. More broadly, from February to September, they only won 3 out of 27 games. These numbers speak volumes: the crisis didn't come unexpectedly; it was prolonged and insidious, eroding the confidence of the entire team.
The biggest problem lies in the team's structure and operation. Girona failed to build a balanced team. Many positions lacked depth, while new signings didn't bring immediate impact. More importantly, many new players arrived too late. Vanat and Ounahi came after the season had already started and were unfamiliar with the La Liga environment. Adaptation time was inevitable, but Girona didn't have the "room" to wait. Each defeat at that point was a blow to their confidence.

Girona is in decline. |
The crisis is most evident in both penalty areas. Girona conceded the most goals in the league (33), while their attack was among the worst (15 goals). Their deeply negative goal difference (-18) not only reflects a lack of technical skill but also reveals a team that has lost its identity. The goalkeeping problem further darkens the picture. Gazzaniga has been criticized, but with Livakovic unavailable and backup options sidelined due to injury, the coach has virtually no choice. It's the situation of a team pushed into a corner.
At the heart of this whirlwind is manager Michel Sanchez. The hero of previous triumphant seasons now faces public skepticism. For the first time, the image of an energetic Michel, controlling the dressing room, is beginning to crack. The pressure of results is wearing him down, and that weariness is spreading throughout the team. Even the management, who have always placed their faith in him, are forced to admit that the manager's position is not immune to a string of failures.
Girona still has a chance. The winter transfer window offers hope of patching up the biggest weaknesses. But the problem isn't just about the players; it's about how the team reflects on itself. Without addressing the root causes of imbalance and psychological crisis, new signings will only be temporary fixes.
From a phenomenon to a relegation battle, Girona is learning the harsh lessons of top-level football. And for Míchel, this could be the biggest challenge of his career: either regain control to pull the team out of the mire, or watch his Champions League dream quickly become a distant memory.
