- Managing and protecting wildlife is of crucial importance. This is considered the "key" to maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance.
Currently, the province's fauna comprises over 500 species, including 71 mammal species, 234 bird species, 72 reptile species, 44 amphibian species, and 86 insect species. In addition, specialized agencies in the province have identified 34 species of plankton and 23 species of benthic animals. The Huu Lien Special Forest Area boasts a high level of biodiversity, with several endangered and rare species.

Along with wild animals in their natural habitat, the province currently has 196 wildlife breeding facilities with over 18,000 individuals, including 142 facilities breeding rare species and 54 facilities breeding common species. In parallel with protecting wild animals, good management of breeding activities plays a crucial role in preventing the legalization of illegally exploited animals from the wild, as well as addressing issues of biosecurity, disease outbreaks, and impacts on the ecosystem.
Recognizing the crucial role of wildlife management and protection in biodiversity, relevant agencies and departments have implemented numerous specific solutions in recent years. Mr. Dang Van Hien, Director of the Special-Use and Protection Forest Management Board (Department of Agriculture and Environment), stated: Currently, the unit is responsible for managing over 12,832 hectares of special-use forests and forest land. The ecosystems of the special-use forests under its management have a very high level of biodiversity, including a diverse range of wildlife. Specifically, the Huu Lien special-use forest has over 400 species of animals belonging to the classes of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including 63 rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book; the Mau Son special-use forest has 84 species of animals belonging to the classes of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including 26 endangered and rare species…
To protect wildlife, the unit focuses on public awareness campaigns; forest patrols and inspections; strengthening coordination; and promoting the application of science and technology in wildlife management and protection. Just since the beginning of 2026, the unit has organized two awareness sessions with over 60 participants; and received and released nine wild animals (slow lorises, sand turtles, and white-bellied sandpipers) back into the wild.
Similarly, the Van Lang Regional Forest Protection Department has focused on implementing wildlife management and protection. Mr. Hoang Ngoc Khoi, Head of the Van Lang Regional Forest Protection Department, stated: To effectively protect wildlife, the unit has intensified propaganda and mobilization efforts to discourage people from hunting, keeping, trading, or illegally using wild animals. Simultaneously, they regularly coordinate with relevant authorities to exchange information, conduct inspections, and handle violations (including 3 administrative penalties, 2 prosecutions, and the release of 3 wild animals back into natural forests since 2025); and inspect and manage wildlife breeding and captivity activities to ensure compliance with regulations.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phiệt, from Hamlet 5, Na Sam Commune, said: "My family has been raising wild animals (civets) for over 10 years and currently has 31 breeding civets. Through the awareness campaigns of the forest rangers, my family understands the legal regulations and complies with all regulations regarding the breeding of wild animals."
Along with the aforementioned units, the management and protection of wildlife in the province has received close attention from all levels and sectors in recent times. Mr. Nguyen Huu Hung, Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department, said: The management and protection of wildlife species is of particular concern to the forest protection force. The Department regularly directs its subordinate units to proactively monitor the situation and organize effective conservation measures to prevent violations. This includes focusing on promoting public awareness and encouraging people to actively participate in protecting wild animals; coordinating with functional forces to inspect, prevent, arrest, and handle violations of laws on the management and protection of wildlife species.
From November 2025 to the present, the Provincial Forest Protection Department, in coordination with the Economic Police Department (Provincial Police), has advised on the development of a plan for propaganda, combating, and handling violations related to the protection of wild animals and aquatic resources. To date, the relevant units have organized 43 propaganda sessions with 843 participants, disseminated information via Zalo to 6,242 individual accounts, distributed 563 leaflets; and processed 11 administrative violations, confiscating 1,435 wild animals. Regarding wild animal breeding facilities, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, the forces have inspected 814 facilities, and processed 5 facilities for violations related to the failure to keep timely and complete records.
With the involvement of relevant agencies and units, the hunting, keeping, and trading of wild animals in the province have been basically controlled in recent times; violations have been promptly detected, apprehended, and strictly handled by forest rangers and functional agencies in accordance with regulations. This has contributed to raising awareness about wildlife protection in the community and directly contributed to the development of biodiversity in the area.
