Due to the suitable soil and climate, guavas from Son Duong commune (formerly Ha Long City), now Hoanh Bo ward, have a crisp, sweet, and fresh flavor, making them popular with consumers. However, more than a decade ago, people in the ward only grew guavas on a small, fragmented scale, mostly using traditional methods and relying heavily on experience, resulting in inconsistent fruit quality and low economic efficiency. Especially during the rainy season, guavas were bland, less fragrant, and softer due to waterlogging and lack of sunlight for sugar accumulation, leading to not only price drops but also difficulties in sales.
Based on the above situation, in 2021, the Viet Hung Agricultural, Forestry, and Fisheries Cooperative was established, bringing together nearly 60 households in Dong Giang, Vuon Cau, and Vuon Ram villages to participate in guava cultivation on an area of 15 hectares under a contract-based production and guaranteed product purchase method with quality control. The cooperative also has a clear orientation: clean production, meeting VietGAP standards, while maintaining the brand "Hoanh Bo Guava".
Following this direction, the cooperative requested permission from the Farmers' Association of Ha Long City (formerly) to use the brand name "Hoanh Bo Guava"; at the same time, it produced its own organic fertilizer from fish waste, soybeans, and probiotics to supply to affiliated households; it assigned staff to live and eat with farmers in the fields to provide technical guidance, keep cultivation diaries, and monitor the use of fertilizers and pesticides to create clean and safe products for consumers and improve health. product competition on the market. The cooperative purchases all products at a price at least 2,000 VND/kg higher than the market price.
Thanks to its systematic and scientific approach, in 2022, the cooperative's guavas received the OCOP 4-star certification from the province. and The product has been selected to participate in trade fairs both within and outside the province. In 2025, the product will also be displayed at the "80 Years of Independence - Freedom - Happiness" Exhibition, taking place from August 28th to September 5th at the National Exhibition Center (Dong Anh, Hanoi ).

According to Ms. Nguyen Thuy Ha, Director of the Cooperative, Hoanh Bo guava has now maintained its position and brand in the market. On average, the cooperative exports 1 ton of guava to the market daily at a stable price of 35,000 VND/kg. To create sustainable added value for agricultural products, in addition to fresh guava, the cooperative also processes guava wine (white wine brewed from Hoanh Bo upland rice, which has received OCOP 3-star certification from the province, using the traditional handcrafted method of the San Diu ethnic people combined with Hoanh Bo guava).
The cooperative also invested in professional packaging and labeling, with traceability stamps, planting area codes, and QR codes to make it easy for consumers to check. ( Year) 2022, The product "Hoanh Bo Guava Wine" has received the OCOP 3-star certification from the province and Popular with tourists, it contributes to elevating the value of guava from a raw agricultural product to a tourist gift item . In 2025, Hoanh Bo guava and guava wine will be honored as two of the 27 typical agricultural products of the province.
Recognizing the high demand for fresh fruit juices from foreign tourists visiting Ha Long Market I, the cooperative has recently developed a product: pure guava juice. With its refreshing taste and lack of preservatives, the product has attracted many visitors. On peak days, the cooperative sells 50 liters of guava juice at 50,000 VND per liter. Through this flexible approach, the cooperative has successfully addressed the challenges faced when agricultural products experience price drops during bumper harvests.
With selling prices higher than market prices and consistently stable output, each hectare of guava trees belonging to the Viet Hung Agricultural, Forestry, and Fisheries Cooperative can generate an income of 200-300 million VND per year, becoming a stable source of livelihood for households; contributing to increasing the percentage of well-off and wealthy households, thereby further affirming the role of the collective economy in new rural development.
