Natural landscapes intertwined with legends

Located about 20km south of Nha Trang, Suoi Tien (Fairy Stream) boasts a pristine and beautiful natural landscape with many unique rock formations, waterfalls, caves, and clear, cool streams. Suoi Tien originates from the Hon Ba mountain range and flows towards the plains, crossing numerous gorges and valleys. The stream meanders through rocky outcrops, creating a romantic scene. The upstream area has rugged terrain with layers of stacked rocks, smoothed by the stream over time to create many unique shapes. Surrounding the stream is a primeval forest with many lush, ancient trees. Ho Tien (Fairy Lake) is part of Suoi Tien; this natural lake is formed by large and small rocks blocking the stream. The water in Ho Tien is clear, cool, and transparent, revealing the bottom with white sand and small fish. Along Suoi Tien, there are other beautiful sights such as: Elephant's Footprint; Giant's Footprint; Fairy Chessboard; Fairy Cave… all possessing unique beauty and associated with folk legends.

An old folk song goes: "The Fairy Stream flows gently / The fairies leave behind a moss-covered chessboard / Clouds drift by, the days and months follow the stream / The steadfast rocks still hope day and night…" Legend says that long ago, a giant was traveling the human world and stopped to rest at the Fairy Stream. However, that year coincided with a drought, and the stream dried up without a drop of water. So he prayed to the fairies for rain to fill the stream. His prayer was answered; dark clouds gathered, and strong winds caused the giant's belt, hanging from an ancient tree branch, to become entangled and stuck to a large rock by the stream. Along the stream are large, flat rocks where the fairies used to play chess. Folklore explains the giant's footprint as a result of his carelessness; he slipped and fell, one foot pressing into the rock while his hand clung so tightly to the cliff that the rocks fell into the sea, forming Hon Chong (Husband and Wife Rocks), and a rock with the giant handprint still remains on Hon Chong. The elephant footprints were left behind by fairies who rode elephants to visit this place…

It needs to be ranked and protected.

According to Mr. Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Suoi Tien scenic spot not only has scenic value but also historical and cultural significance through folk tales and events related to the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism waged by the army and people of Khanh Hoa. In terms of landscape, Suoi Tien boasts majestic and beautiful scenery nestled amidst a mountainous forest ecosystem with lush and diverse vegetation. It has long been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike to visit, relax, and unwind.

It is known that a company is currently developing tourism activities in the downstream area of Suoi Tien, covering an area of over 12 hectares. Other areas, however, are still experiencing spontaneous tourism activities lacking strict management, leading to significant pollution from waste left behind by locals and tourists; and the damage to the scenic beauty and ecosystem continues unabated. To preserve and promote the cultural and historical value of Suoi Tien, on April 23rd, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Center for Conservation of Historical Relics submitted a proposal to create a dossier for classifying Suoi Tien as a scenic spot. Accordingly, Suoi Tien has been included in the inventory of historical relics by a decision of the Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, making the creation of a scientific dossier for consideration of provincial-level relic classification appropriate. However, during the application process, it is necessary to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to understand and review related plans to ensure that the protected area does not overlap with other plans; for areas currently being used for tourism, the development orientation needs to be carefully considered to delineate a suitable protected zone.
