Preserving the green forests of Son Luong

Local forest rangers, in coordination with the Xuan Thang Forest Protection Team, regularly patrol the area, contributing to maintaining the natural forest area under their management.

With over 2,200 hectares of protective forest and nearly 3,300 hectares of production forest, Son Luong commune has a forest cover rate of 60.3%. These vast green forests not only play a crucial role in disaster prevention and environmental protection but also serve as a vital source of livelihood for the local people. Recognizing this, the commune's Party committee and government have implemented many comprehensive solutions, mobilizing the entire political system and the community to participate in forest protection efforts.

One of the highlights of Son Luong commune is the maintenance and effective operation of its forest protection teams. Currently, the commune has 15 forest protection teams, mainly composed of local people, who directly participate in patrolling, monitoring, and preventing acts of encroachment on forest resources. These teams are contracted to protect natural forests, contributing to raising community responsibility in forest conservation.

In the Xuan Thang area, forest protection work is implemented seriously and systematically. Mr. Trieu Tai Khoa, Head of the Natural Forest Protection Team in Xuan Thang area, said: “Our team is assigned to protect more than 137 hectares of natural forest, all of which is protective forest. This area has steep terrain and difficult access, but the team members always maintain regular patrols, promptly detecting and preventing violations. Thanks to this, for many years, the assigned forest area has not experienced any illegal logging or exploitation.”

Along with patrolling and protecting the forest, Son Luong commune also focuses on raising awareness among the people about the role and significance of the forest. Through neighborhood meetings and community activities, the content of forest protection and forest fire prevention and control is regularly integrated, helping people understand their responsibilities and rights. As a result, awareness of complying with forestry laws has improved, and violations have decreased significantly.

Forest fire prevention and control are also given special attention by the local authorities, especially during the dry season. Specific fire prevention and control plans are developed to suit the actual conditions of each area. Local forces are mobilized and ready to respond when a situation arises. Thanks to proactive measures in this area, there have been no forest fires in the region for many years.

Alongside protecting natural forests, Son Luong also promotes the sustainable development of production forests. Local people are guided to apply scientific and technological advancements in planting, caring for, and harvesting planted forests, improving the productivity and quality of forestry trees. The selection of tree species suitable to the soil and climate conditions has helped many production forest areas achieve high economic efficiency, contributing to improving the lives of the people.

Notably, linking forest protection with livelihood development has brought about a significant transformation. Many households have boldly invested in developing economic activities under the forest canopy, such as cultivating medicinal plants and raising livestock, combined with agricultural and forestry economic models. This has not only increased income but also contributed to reducing pressure on forest resources.

Despite achieving many positive results, forest protection in Son Luong still faces numerous challenges. The vast and fragmented terrain, coupled with the increasing economic development needs of the local people, presents significant obstacles. However, with the determination of the local government and the consensus of the people, forest conservation efforts are being effectively maintained.

In the coming period, Son Luong commune will continue to identify forest protection and development as a key, long-term task. The locality will further strengthen state management of forestry, promote the role of the community, and take advantage of support resources to improve the effectiveness of forest protection. In addition, the replication of economic models linked to forests will also be emphasized, aiming to ensure a harmonious balance between economic development and environmental protection.

Preserving the green forests is not only an immediate task but also a long-term responsibility of the entire political system and every citizen of Son Luong. The green forests of today are a shield protecting life, a sustainable source of livelihood for the present and future generations. With continuous efforts, Son Luong is gradually preserving and promoting the precious value of its forest resources, contributing to building a more sustainable and developed homeland.
