Harsh natural conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and difficult living conditions for the people have been challenges. Over the past period, officers and staff of Production Team 9 (52nd Regiment, 337th Economic -Defense Group, 4th Military Region) have linked the Emulation Movement for Victory with the implementation of appropriate and effective socio-economic development models in the area.

Under the scorching early summer sun, we arrived at Production Team 9, located along the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Right from the entrance, vibrant clusters of roses, petunias, and water lilies bloomed. Beneath a trellis laden with gourds, Major Pham Ngoc Chau, Team Leader of Production Team 9, and Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Ngoc Quy, Deputy Team Leader, were busy processing animal feed. While working, Lieutenant Colonel Quy shared: “The team currently has nearly 50 cows, 30 breeding goats, 5 deer, 50 pigs, and hundreds of poultry. Due to high transportation costs and expensive animal feed, the unit proactively processes the feed itself. Utilizing self-grown cassava, sweet potatoes, and corn, combined with ingredients such as fish heads, calcium, and vitamins, the unit invested nearly 15 million dong in a processing machine. The investment was recouped in just 3 months, serving both the unit's own livestock and supporting local people.”
Around noon, the work was finally finished. Major Pham Ngoc Chau said: “The unit focuses on building economic models to help people overcome poverty. With the motto ‘stay close to the people, stay close to the villages, stay close to the locality,’ officers directly guide people on livestock farming techniques, disease prevention and control, support with breeding stock, supplies, and building barns.” Thanks to this, many families in Chenh Veng village, starting with just a few livestock, have developed their herds. For example, the family of Mr. Ho Van Do, who received support with 3 goats, now has more than 10. The family of Mr. Ho Van Thuan, who started with 1 cow, has developed it into 3, creating a stable source of income.

Every year, through various models, Production Team 9 has provided hundreds of breeding animals (pigs, cows, goats, poultry) along with rice seeds and fertilizers to the people. As a result, the people have learned to cultivate wet rice and raise livestock in new ways, gradually eliminating nomadic farming practices and eradicating backward customs.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Dinh Thang, Political Commissar of Regiment 52, said: “Production Team 9 always effectively implements the motto of eating together, living together, working together, and speaking the local dialect together. From this practical experience, many effective models of mass mobilization have emerged, such as: Party branches assisting 1-2 disadvantaged families; production teams establishing fraternal ties with villages; sponsoring and raising orphans; and the "Helping Children Go to School" program.”
We bid farewell to Production Team 9 as the evening shadows fell over the ancient trees at the top of the Sa Mu pass. Here, the team's officers and staff silently work day and night to help the local people, contributing to the construction of the Khe Sanh Economic-Defense Zone, making it a strong base for the people and further strengthening the "people's support" in this border region.
