Google: 90% of tech employees use AI in their work.

A large proportion of tech workers now use artificial intelligence in their jobs, particularly for writing and editing source code, according to a new Google study.

A report published by Google's DORA research division, based on 5,000 responses from tech professionals worldwide , shows that 90% of survey participants are using AI in their work, a 14% increase from last year.

This finding comes amid the rise of AI, which has brought with it both concern, excitement, and expectations about how this technology might impact jobs and the economy . Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei drew attention in May when he said AI could lead to a surge in unemployment, although many other tech experts have since tried to downplay these concerns.

Google is one of many companies looking to capitalize on the trend of AI-powered software development; it offers tools ranging from free to $45 per month to support coding and deploying software development tasks.

The company also faces fierce competition, not only from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, but also from AI startups like Replit and Anysphere, which are seeing their valuations skyrocket thanks to the wave of technology companies adopting AI.

Ryan J. Salva, who oversees Google's programming tools such as Gemini Code Assist, said that "the vast majority" of teams at Google are now using AI, and the technology has been integrated into everything from how documentation is written to Google's source code editors.

"If you're an engineer at Google, it's inevitable that you'll be using AI in your daily work," he said in an interview with CNN before the report was published.

However, the fact that programmers use AI doesn't mean all of them find it useful. 46% of tech professionals surveyed said they "somewhat trust" the quality of code generated by AI, 23% "a little" trust, and 20% "very much trust." Regarding impact, 31% believe AI "slightly improves" code quality, while 30% see "no impact."

Salva estimates that, on a scale of one to five, with one representing basic text prediction and five representing the ability of AI to understand vague, general commands, AI in software development is currently at a level "between stage three and four." This means that AI can handle errors across many systems but still requires human review and "multiple layers of security."

The adoption of AI tools is occurring amidst increasing difficulty in finding new jobs. Unemployment rates among computer science and computer engineering graduates are now higher than those with art history or English degrees, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The number of software engineer job postings on the Indeed platform has decreased by 71% from February 2022 to August 2025.

Many recent computer science graduates who spoke to CNN earlier this year said they remain optimistic about career prospects, but acknowledged that AI is changing the nature of work. Julio Rodriguez said he submitted more than 150 job applications before finding one.

Despite the rapid increase in AI applications, Salva believes that there are still crucial steps in software development that cannot be automated, and AI will primarily streamline repetitive and tedious tasks.

However, he also acknowledged that the acceptance of AI was, to some extent, due to the hype surrounding the technology.

“Software development is like fashion… We all chase after the new style of jeans,” he said. “And when there’s so much talk about it, everyone’s eager to try something new.”
