Ha Long Bay is a small bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, encompassing a sea area and islands formed 3 million years ago, now under the administration of Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province.
According to Vietnamese folklore, a dragon landed in this sea region, creating towering rock formations on the water's surface resembling the serpentine body of a dragon. Today, this area comprises nearly 2000 islands of varying sizes, a hub of biodiversity with many endemic plant and animal species.
