According to the Russian news agency RIA , on August 20, Google filed lawsuits in several courts in the UK and the US, including the Northern California Court in California, against two Russian television channels, Tsargrad TV and ANO TV-Novosti (owner of RT), and an Orthodox television organization, after these three channels sued Google.
Following Russia's launch of a special military operation in Ukraine, YouTube (a subsidiary of Google) blocked several Russian television channels.
Recently, the Moscow Arbitration Court (Russia) declared that Google's unilateral termination of contracts with Russian television channels was a breach of contract and an illegal act.
The Moscow court also ordered YouTube to unblock Russian channels, restore access for Russian users, and forced Google to pay a fine of 100,000 rubles (nearly $1,200) per day from the date the court issued its decision.
To date, the fine imposed on Google by the Moscow court has reached 32.7 billion rubles (over $356.4 million). However, Google has refused to pay the fine to Moscow.
According to Vedomosti , access speeds to YouTube channels in Russia began to slow down in July and officially stopped streaming high-quality videos to Russian users on August 3rd. By August 8th, numerous Russian users reported being unable to access the YouTube platform.
Moscow officials claim that Russians are unable to access YouTube because Google, YouTube's parent company, has restricted its operation.
