According to GSMArena , affected employees received a notification stating: “We’ve had to make some difficult decisions about continuing to employ some Google employees and we regret to inform you that your position is about to be terminated.”
Several hundred Google employees lost their jobs.
Google later confirmed the job cuts across its Assistant and hardware teams. A statement from a company spokesperson said they were investing in “the biggest priorities and key opportunities ahead.”
The Alphabet Workers Union, a group representing more than 1,400 employees at Google's parent company, said the latest round of layoffs was "unnecessary." In a post on X, the group said Google "cannot continue to lay off its employees while still making billions of dollars every quarter."
Google is reportedly reorganizing to have fewer but more focused teams of specialists, which in theory could lead to a unified product line, both in spirit and function, as employees will focus on leveraging the same resources instead of being separated as before. For example, the Fitbit team has its own designers, engineers, etc.
This will help the company refine its products in the same way Apple does, as evidenced by the increasingly impressive iPhones. All these developments help the company position itself to better compete with Apple.
Google is offering “standard support,” and those who lose their jobs will have the opportunity to apply for any available positions within the company.
