On September 30, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., announced it will invest $1 billion in Thailand to build a data center and cloud facility to meet the growing demand and support the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia.
Google emphasized that this investment will create an average of 14,000 jobs per year until 2029.
According to Google, its cloud infrastructure and data centers in Bangkok and Chonburi province will help meet the growing demand for Google Cloud capabilities and AI advancements, as well as the company's popular digital services such as search, maps, and Google Workspace.
Google's data center will be located in an industrial park in Chonburi province, while Google's cloud facility, which includes hardware and software specializing in providing services to private and public sector organizations, will be located in Bangkok.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra affirmed that Google's investment is "fully consistent" with the country's Cloud-First Policy.
On the same day, Ms. Paetongtarn met with Mr. Ruth Porat, Chairwoman and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet Inc. and Google, to discuss collaboration in the technology sector. According to the Thai Government Office , the discussion also addressed Google's investment plans for developing digital infrastructure in Thailand.
In May 2024, another major technology corporation, Microsoft, announced it would open its first regional data center in Thailand as part of its efforts to promote cloud services.
