According to Reuters, on December 13 (local time), the Democratic-controlled US House of Representatives will vote to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Prior to this, the House Rules Committee voted to pass a resolution authorizing the formal opening of an impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
The resolution, proposed by Republican Representative Kelly Armstrong, requests three House committees to authorize an investigation into President Joe Biden's business dealings, alleging that Biden and his family improperly benefited from policy decisions he participated in as Vice President under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.
They also accused the Justice Department of inappropriate interference in the investigation of businessman Hunter Biden, son of President Biden.
Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, a member of one of the three committees investigating Biden, said the investigation is expected to conclude within the next two months and the House will draft articles of impeachment in the spring.
To date, Republicans in the House have yet to present evidence linking Biden's actions as Vice President to his son's business dealings. Therefore, it is unlikely that the Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority, will vote to convict the president if the House passes articles of impeachment against him.
The White House has repeatedly dismissed the investigation, calling it a "baseless act" aimed at appeasing right-wing lawmakers. U.S. House representatives are scheduled to leave Washington D.C. on December 14th for a holiday break lasting more than three weeks.
