According to Axios on January 30th, the US House of Representatives' administrative leader sent a notice to congressmen's offices, requesting that they not use the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) application DeepSeek while it is under investigation.

DeepSeek is an AI-based chatbot application that has taken the global tech market by storm recently, boasting capabilities comparable to leading applications like ChatGPT or Gemini, but with significantly lower development costs and built on older chips.
However, the app is also facing reservations from officials in some Western countries regarding privacy and data management.
Italy's Garante data protection agency blocked DeepSeek's access on January 30 to protect user data and launched an investigation into the companies behind the chatbot, according to AP.
Two U.S. House representatives, John Moolenaar (Republican) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (Democrat), who lead the committee on competition with China, are urging President Donald Trump to consider banning the export of Nvidia's H20 AI chips, which DeepSeek uses, as well as other chips with similar technology.
The U.S. Commerce Department and State Department are reviewing U.S. export restrictions imposed by President Trump amid new developments involving strategic rivals. The request from the two lawmakers is part of that review.
Nvidia has issued a statement saying that its products fully comply with government regulations and that the company is ready to work with authorities regarding AI issues. President Trump is reportedly considering banning the export of the H20 chip, a chip that Nvidia manufactures for export, in order to avoid bans on other advanced chips.
