Hai Phong FC eliminated from AFC Cup 2023-24

Hai Phong FC traveled to Indonesia's Persatuan Sepakbola Makassar stadium without their best squad, and their chances of advancing in the Asian tournament were slim.

Hai Phong FC controlled possession more in the early minutes of the match. In the 24th minute, the visitors nearly scored when Huu Son unleashed a long-range shot, but the ball narrowly missed the target.

Playing at home, Makassar played quite cautiously, and they didn't have any particularly clear attacking combinations in the first 35 minutes, almost completely ceding control of the game to Coach Chu Đình Nghiêm's players.

Towards the end of the first half, Hai Phong players continuously put pressure on goalkeeper Arya's goal, but their strikers were too wasteful in their finishing. However, the joy of the visiting team's players did not last long. In the 77th minute, from a direct free kick outside the 16-meter box, Yakob Sayuri equalized 1-1 for PSM, much to the excitement of the Indonesian fans. This was the final score of the match.

After 5 rounds, Hai Phong FC has 7 points, ranking second in Group H behind Sabah FC (12 points). The AFC Cup 2023-2024 features 12 teams divided into three groups in the Southeast Asian region. The teams play a double round-robin format, with the top three group winners and the best-performing second-placed team advancing to the semi-finals.

Of the three second-placed teams, Hai Phong FC is in last place and has no chance of advancing as Phnom Penh Crown of Cambodia already has 12 points. The match against Hougang FC on December 14th at Lach Tray Stadium is merely a formality for Hai Phong FC.
